The Baptistery of San Giovanni is considered a famous and complex historic model for Renaissance art in Italy. It is located in center of Florence, Cathedral. There are two surviving competition panels, one by Filippo Brunelleschi and the other by Lorenzo Ghiberti. These pieces of art work were of significant influence at the time of their design, they attracted varied opinions. The compositional sources and aesthetic qualities of both doors have for centuries now been subjected to many debates and discussions since their completion, and competition. This paper looks at which of the artist should have won the competition. In addition, it provides the strength and weakness exhibited by the other artist.
Another reason for Brunelleschi’s panel wining the competition is because of the fact that it utilizes less bronze that makes it more appealing and to have visible images. It is very visible that Isaac in the competition panel portrays a sense of fragility and horror in his expressions and possess. The next object that can be seen is the ram and at the bottom there is a dramatic event shown by the two servants. There is an ass that is stretching to drink some water from a spring. All these are unique characteristics that make the panel win the competition.
Finally, the boarder frame did justice to the panel as it gave it a nice finish of the art work. There are two boarders, one on the inside that is very close to the image and takes different patterns, which is as a result of the carvings of the panel. It is also important to note that the panel’s carvings are protruding from the inside.
On the other hand Lorenzo Ghiberti’s images should not have won the completion because, first, it is vague and not clear. The idea being passed to the audience cannot be conceived easily. The Baptistery competition attracted more than seven competitors and amongst all of them only one had to win. However, Ghiberti’s panel could not win because it had one common image therefore it could not give a story and even relate to the people of Florence. These weaknesses make it had for Ghiberti’s panel to win the competition. However, the panel also had some strength such as it clearly shows historical carvings though do not depict the societal image. It also uses bronze in a manner that brings out the inner feature of the panel.
In conclusion, the two panels had unique feature that made them outstanding. However, in a competition there must be a winner. Art is usually unique and gives the audience a sense of belonging. It is this captivity that made Filippo Brunelleschi to have the winning panel.
