The liquid in the photography may give an additional meaning and charm, and may also spoil the whole composition by shooting with the wrong technology and construct. This essay highlights the use of liquid in pictures and the role of so-called “Liquid Intelligence”. A deep meaning that can bear the presence of liquid in the image is described in the essay. The author also raises a number of issues related to some new and old technologies of such photos.
First of all, it is the coexistence in one image a changing, dynamic component (milk) and a static component (shutters). The author makes us think about how important the presence of such a contrast that only further underscores the complexity of the forms of spilled milk, its natural complicated motion, and static and predictable movement of the shutters. Indeed, the contrast is just as important in everything. And it is impossible to argue with it, as only a comparison can show the whole image of the object and its individual characteristics. Also, one of the elements being compared the author calls archaism – the water, and I rather disagree with it. For me, water is the link between the past and the future, but not just the storage of the memory, which the water keeps; it is the presence of the past events in the current moment. It is some kind of time machine. But times are changing all the time, just as the water in its constant motion, flowing and changing its shape and condition. The author as well observes that modern information systems replace such way of expression as photographic films and says that it is neither bad and nor good, it's just an objective reality that must be taken. However, in my opinion, it is still a great loss, because this technology still had its own characteristics and advantages. As the author himself notes, this replacement of old technologies with the modern ones leads to the loss of the role of such a powerful art’s assistant like water. This quintessence of life and naturalness will be replaced by a digital computer simulated image. Such picture, of course, will look nice and be well modeled, but it won’t have its soul. This is the same loss as the extinction of the black-and-white silent films. These films now appear only in the amateur or avant-garde projects, and yet these films have its strong sides, highlights and original themes, they nowadays are almost gone. Likewise, photos taken using old technologies have meaning and value. After all, to find out whether it had been a good shot or not, it was necessary to show the film. And sometimes the whole film could have only a couple of good shots, making them even more valuable to the photographer. Surely, modern technology simplifies the work of the photographer, who can see the picture immediately after the shot. And besides, graphical editors will help to correct minor flaws, making the picture brighter and more colorful. Being a professional becomes both simpler and more complicated. It is simply because today there is a bunch of assistants to help make the picture better. And it is complicated because to transfer the movement and naturalness of, for example, the water, a person really needs to understand the essence of things and the importance of the composition of the pictures.
Summing up, we can say that the author has made us reflect on the very essence of photography and the importance of one particular element – the liquid in the composition of the picture. Water can act as a friend and an assistant to the photographer, passing the necessary motion and naturalness. And although in our time to do the high-quality images is becoming easier and easier, all the same, old technology of film photos can better convey the idea and thought of the photographer.
