Compare and contrast Miriam Schapiro's Personal Appearance #3 with Faith Ringgold's Tar Beach. Discuss both artists' craft influences and intentions.
Miriam borrowed a lot of different techniques from quilting in her works especially in Personal Appearance #3, which was big enough to cover up a small bed. The work is full of energy and is like a quilt because it is made of scraps of clothes. Even though it is not a useful object, it has the appearance that it is very useful. Ringgold’s Tar Beach also uses a form of quilting but it is acrylic on a canvas that is bordered by some paint and clothing that is quilted. Her piece is a lot more realistic than the other piece because it is less abstract. Both works of art were influenced by people to make quilts. Schapiro’s seems to be more influenced by quilt makers in the past. Ringgold does this too but in a more realistic way of painting a dream of equality.
What is the aim of environmental design? What are different aspects of environmental design? Discuss how environmental design might be used to improve your community.
The aim of environmental design is to reduce the impact that a building is going to have on the environment and to make sure that the inside of the building is safe. The aspects are to use building materials that have been recycled or natural products like a garden on the roof of the building. This will help to maximize the amount of sunlight to provide more natural light when it is possible. In a community where there is not a lot of rain but plenty of sunlight, methods of saving water and using the natural light or solar paneling is going to be very helpful.
