Part 1 Job Reference Relevance
I hope to enter the corporate sector as a marketing executive or salesperson. There are several qualities about myself that I would like someone else to share about me. The first is that I am a hard worker. I am quite social, and I relate well with people. I am also very persuasive, an aspect that will come in handy in my work as a salesperson. I am very innovative, and I am always coming up with new ways of doing things. Finally, I am always willing to listen to my mistakes and to respond positively to criticism.
Response A
The qualities mentioned are all relevant to the job profession that you hope to enter in the future. There is no doubt that you would immediately be hired if these qualities were relayed to a potential employer.
Part B
In the article “America’s Secret Innovation Weapon: Immigration", Mike Speiser argues that good immigration policies in America can lead to more productivity and innovation than good science and math education, spending on basic research processes as well as other venture capitals combined. The author provides statistics that indicate that most of the people who hold the ability to push the innovation of the nation forward reside outside States. The ones who are present in the United States cannot spur the innovation of the nation by any significant margins and to make up for this, the government should restructure its immigration policies to allow the more than 1.28 million people who have the ability to push innovation to enter the county.
In the article titled “Reform Immigration for America." Bhargava main argument revolves around the need for immigration policy reforms. Bhargava tries to justify why immediate immigration reforms are paramount arguing that the need for reforms emanates from a moral, human rights as well as economic perspective. He gives several examples including accounts of victims of the current oppressive immigration reforms to show why there is a need for change.
Use of Rhetorical Appeals
The major rhetorical appeal used by Speiser is the logos appeal. This is an appeal to logic where he tries to provide evidence to show that his argument is logical. For instance, he gives many statistics such as the current number of people in the US and in the world and the fraction of these people who have the capability to drive the innovation of the country forward. The author seems to favor this sort of appeal as he thinks that by providing proof or evidence regarding his argument, the audience or reader will inadvertently agree with him.
On the other hand, Bhargava mainly utilizes the pathos appeal. In this appeal to emotion, the author writes or gives examples of things that are supposed to make the reader emotional and evoke certain feelings of him. For instance, he gives a sad and emotional example of an immigrant who dies of cancer under detention and the main purpose of this is convince the reader by capturing his emotion, Bhragava prefers using this rhetoric appeal because he knows that emotion is a very strong aspect that can make his reader agree with his argument.
How the authors positions informs what they are talking about
Speiser has clearly done a lot of research on his issue. His passion and deep research are exhibited in the issue especially in the way he so passionately adopts the position of restructuring the immigration policies to allow entrance of smart individuals who can spur the nation’s innovation high. The defense of his argument convinces the reader those immigration reforms might not be such a bad thing after all.
Bhargava is clearly for immigration reforms. He seems to be personally attached to the issue and supports so emotionally. He informs the audience about the oppressive nature of current policies by giving various examples.
The organizations the authors work for and how their jobs shape the author’s views on immigration
Bhargava works for comunitychange.org, which is a social movement that aims to create a society where everyone has enough resources to thrive and consequently achieve their maximum potential. His involvement with this movement shapes his views on the issue of immigration. He argues that immigrants given space to acquire legal status and, therefore, enjoy the same rights enjoyed by the rest of Americans.
Speiser works for Sutter Hill Ventures, an organization that provides equity or capital investments for companies that are technology based. His affiliation with this organization significantly shapes his views. He is interested in technology innovation, and he hopes relaxation of immigration laws will allow more technology innovative individuals to trickle into the country and provide a much needed innovation boost.
Part C
Claim
The essays by Speiser and Bhargava have an almost similar foundation and one point of similarity is that their primary focus is on the immigration issue. The authors’ main argument revolves around the issue of immigration, specifically the issue of immigration reforms. Both authors support immigration reforms.
Evidence
Speiser states “Smart immigration policies will do more for American innovation and productivity than better math and science education” (Speiser) This clearly shows that he in favour of new immigration reforms. This quote is the premise of the author’s main argument where he proceeds to show how smart immigration policies will benefit the country. Bhargava is also clearly in favor of immigration reforms. He states “Immigration reform is right not only from a moral, human rights perspective, but also from an economic perspective.”(Bhargava). Through this quote, he is trying to show that the benefits of immigration reforms will not only be realized in one sector but rather in a couple of sectors
Focus on Claim and Evidence
Speiser introduces his argument through the quote mentioned because he is aware of the impact that it will have to the reader. In addition, his subsequent evidence shows that he believes in his argument, that is the institution of immigration reforms and he wants to share his opinion with his readers. Bhargava on his part is particularly interested in the victims of oppressive immigration policies, which is the moral perspective of the policies that he is referring to. He aims to show to the audience that immigration policies must be instituted at once to contain some of the harms that they may have already caused.
