The research in the journal was carried out owing to the belief and claims by people that violent computer games and other violent videos lead to violent effects on individuals. The claims were that these games and videos make people to become angry easily, aggressive behaviors and aggressive thoughts. Such people have greater chances of committing violent crimes. However, this information had not been proved since there was no reasonable research that had been carried out to prove this. This is why the research was conducted to evaluate this belief. The thesis of the article is to find out the effects of violent media on the behaviors of individuals.
The sample used consisted of 257 college students. These students participated voluntarily in the research process. The sample consisted of both males and females. 124 of the participants were male while 133 of them were females.
The methodology that was used in the study involved following a procedure. The sample selected was informed what was being investigated. Part of the sample was required to play violent games and the other sample was required to play non violent games, after playing the games, the two groups were required to watch violent videos relating to real life situations that occur in the daily lives of the people. Some of the videos involve people stabbing each other on several occasions. After watching the video games, the heart rate of the two groups was measured and analysis was made. The fact that two groups were used means that there was a control experiment that was to prove whether the games have an effect on the way people view violence. Measuring the heart rate was necessary to evaluate the emotional changes of the two groups when there is violence.
The data collected was then analyzed through graphs. Graphs are important research tools in that they help do comparisons. In this experiment, the graphs were necessary to compare the effect that the violent games had on emotions of the two groups.
The results showed that the group that played non violent games had a greater heart rate. This shows that they were emotional when they saw the violent activities. It shows fear in them and they see the activities as abnormal and to some extent, they would not have the courage of doing the activities. On the other hand, the heart rate of the group that had played violent games appeared to be normal. They seemed not much worried by the violent activities. This means that they view the actions as normal activities. They have no emotions when they see these activities happen considering that they appear to be used to these activities. It shows that these people can do similar acts freely.
The article relates to the materials read in class in that it gives some of the reasons why crime rates have increased. Crimes have increased in the modern world because of the fact that people have seen criminal activities as normal activities. They have therefore the courage to do such violent activities.
