The basic responsibility of a teacher is to understand, recognize and appreciate the nature and behavior of a child. Every child is unique and does possess special characters. No other person knows a child better than its parents, and it is critical for a teacher to partner and get involved in the discussions with the parents to know more about the child. A caring and an indulging teacher can always instigate a confidence in the parents and create a belief that they can take care of the children with special needs in the absence of parents. The need of a parent is to hand over their children to the teachers who create a homely environment and train them.
Listening ability is a basic requirement of an educator. Parents of children with special needs tend to be frustrated, impatient and agitated. Listening and sympathizing with the parents is a key in supporting them in such myriad situations. Educators can also be supported in turn to support the children when the families of children with special needs are a part of IFSP and IEP. The educators are required to communicate with the parents on the day to day basis about the development of the disabled child. The transition from the IFSP to IEP can be a difficult process for such families; however they need to adapt and encourage this movement for the benefit of their child who would be moved from the child care center to an institutional classroom.
The parents of children with special needs have to go an extra mile to get their child educated and this can only be possible with the never ending support of caregivers who can relive the stress on the parents. The correct usage of words also makes a difference in knowing the characters of a good educator that will build confidence in the parents that their child is in safe hands. Never speak something disrespectful that could hurt the sentiments of the parents.
