In Brosh Liora,” Consuming Women: The Representation of Women in the 1940 Adaptation of Pride and Prejudice” article the role of women is expounded. The Liora Brosh review dwells on the way the film, Price and Prejudice presents the psychological damage on both genders of the Great Depression. According to the writer, the film celebrates or enhances the theme of consumerism through the depiction of a world full of lush materials. This, however, could not be separated to the fact that women of that time had consumerist desires that were petty and wasteful. The women in the adaptation interests in finance are not presented on the basis of essentiality and need but rather consumerist desires and wants for luxurious products.
Liora Brosh points out the trivial nature the film adaptation treats the genders where women take up a lot of space and roles. The women are predominant in all scenes and the male control depicted as being at risk. The women could have outnumbered men since men were at war but since the war is over in the film, there are no reasons to have the women predominate. The article comes out strongly to show the women dominance of the story and affairs in the adaptation. The simplistic nature the adaptation takes goes a long way in telling of the “Pride and Prejudice” story
The weakness of this adaptation is illustrated by Liora Brosh’s portrayal of bias on women alone without significantly touching on other themes. The article shows women as naive in their consuming patterns by only focusing on the lead characters and their simplistic perception of the economy. The trivia feminism and consumerism alienate women of the nineteenth century from the reality then of the world war effects and heavy financial concerns.
