The Chinese Filipinos were the first Asian to settle in the United States after moving into Mexico then what is now Louisiana. An increasing immigrant Japanese, Filipinos, and Koreans later followed into different destinations within the United States as laborers. The notable events in the Asian American society include the Chinese New Year, which is celebrated on the first day of the first moon of the lunar calendar, which usually falls between January 29th and February 19th of every year, and is commemorated through festivities, food, traditional rituals, and family. The Asian American tradition faces the challenges of establishing cultural identity, notable with the second generation immigrants faced with assimilation pressure into the American culture.
The three main philosophies of the Asian American society include Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. These philosophies ensure a high structure, hierarchy, and paternity of the Asian American families. The Asian principles teach children about family integrity, peace, harmony, and balance. These principles are considered as responsible for the passive, indecisive, and indifferent nature of the Asian Americans. Studies have found the Asian Americans less religious, but also religiously diverse in the present day society. Despite the existence of many religions in Asian Americans, Buddhism is the predominant religion after its establishment in northern India in response to life and teachings of Gautama Siddhartha, who was awarded the title “Buddha”, which means “the awakened one.” The religious compositions of Asian Americans are 26% unaffiliated, 42% Christians, 14% Buddhists, 4 % Muslims, and 10% Hindus.
However, most Asian Americans identify with traditions than religiosity according to a Phew research center’s findings. Dim Sum is a traditional Chinese meal comprising lots of small dishes of several kinds of foods, which include fried or steamed dumplings. Tea also plays a major role in the Asian American culture in ceremonies. Origami, which entails the art of folding paper, is popular with the Japanese and Chinese Americans. The Asian American culture is highly hereditary with much focus on the traditional celebrations and events.
