According to the ASME Code of Ethics for Engineers, every member should practice according to the prescribed ethical standards in reference to the ASME constitution. The three fundamental principles outline the guidelines to be followed in the engineering profession. First, engineers should uphold and advance the integrity, honor and dignity of the engineering profession by utilizing knowledge and skills for the improvement of human welfare. Second, it demands honest and impartiality while serving their clients and the public. Last, it strives to increase the competence and prestige of the engineering profession.
In relation to the image, the principles demand that a student should either work hard and excel in the engineering profession or quit from the profession completely. Cheating is in contravention with the principal cannons and ethics. If a student cheats in an exam, it amounts to a risk since his inability to grasp all the aspects of engineering will lead to accidents as a result of inefficiencies. The inefficiencies in designing, construction and manufacturing will expose a lot of people to danger most of which may result in deaths.
The consequences are far much outweighing to the individual and the engineering profession. The fundamental cannons require that engineers hold dearly the safety, health and welfare of the public in execution of their professional duties and responsibilities. Further, it requires that they perform services in their areas of competence, building professional reputation on the merit of their services rather than unfair competition. As such a cheating student is not competent in any area of specialization and does not put the safety, health and welfare of the public at first. It renders the engineering profession questionable and unreliable.
According to the third cannon, professional engineers are required to continually develop their careers and assist those under their supervision to thrive. A professional engineer who cheated all the way from the college will not be able to progress career wise, neither will he mentor those under his supervision to career excellence.
The and fifth sixth cannon entails the respects for proprietary y rights and intellectual property rights of others and association with reputable persons respectively. The former requires that engineers respect the rights of others and their work in charitable organizations and professional societies. Cheating displays a lack of this moral and entirely contravenes it. Association with professionals of disreputable nature dints the profession. This is supported by the seventh cannon that stipulate that engineers should issue public statements in an objective and truthful manner. Upcoming engineers such as those in learning institutions issue their first statements to the public that they are eligible for the engineering task ahead of them through examinations and other evaluative mechanisms. A cheat during such activities discredits the profession.
The ASME code of ethics and the Florida Tech Academic Integrity and Academic Dishonesty handbook stipulate the cultivation of good morals in the engineering profession and the society. The tenth cannon requires that members of the society shall endeavor to abide by the constitution, By-Laws and policies of the society and, further, uphold Code of Ethics or the Society’s Conflict of Interest policy in a prompt, truthful and complete manner. Cheating in college is just the foundation of other dishonesty practices which contravenes the society policy, ASME code of ethics and the Florida Tech Academic Integrity and Academic Dishonesty.
