Communication is one of the most important features for the growth and development of a child. Their are many barriers that can be responsible for lack of communication in children. ADHD is one of the leading barriers to communication since the children with this disorder are often misunderstood (Faraone 23).
What is ADHD
ADHD is a disorder that is experienced predominantly at an early age and consists of spontaneous uncontrolled reactions that are usually in the form of speech or movement’s .One of the challenges that is experienced with the identification of this condition is the fact that parents confuses it with normal behavior that is often displayed by children (Faraone 23). This condition is seen around children who are aged between three and seven years old .At this are most of the children begin to display the same type of responses such as inability to stay in one place, lack of paying attention and forgetfulness (Barkley 12).
Identifying ADHD
Doctors have come up with ways in which parents can dictate symptoms of ADHD in children. The condition can be determined by some specific characteristics that have been reported in previous cases by parents of children who have been diagnosed with this condition.
Impulsive behavior
Impulsive behavior can be described as uncontrollable and unexpected responses to situations .Since impulsive behavior is unplanned this characteristics in children be can one of the first symptoms that a parents can use to identify this disorder.
Hyperactive behavior
Hyper activeness is displayed by children who may show periods of nonstop movements and conversations which may result in the random quietness that is rather unexpected. Such children tend to be more active than the normal child and can be confuse for a normal active child (Barkley 12).
Lack of paying attention
Children who do not pay attention are often unnoticed in that they keep a low profile .This secludes them from a group of other children and may lead to a late diagnosis of a child. The problem becomes evident when the child begins to acquire a less than average score in class .They show a lack of interest in all the activities both academic and social .Lastly they tend to drift away from a particular topic which is one of the major indicators of the condition(Faraone 23).
Apart from these symptoms children with ADHD tend to make many mistakes and have difficulties not remembering what they have just been taught. Parents should ensure that they introduce new activities to their children so that they can maintain their level of interest. This also exposes the children to adopting hobbies that they may want to take on in the future.
Conclusion
One of the misunderstandings that have been associated with ADHD in children is the assumption that they cannot pay attention .When children with ADHD are given tasks that they enjoy to do, they develop a coping mechanism that enables them to focus just like any other child. Despite this, children may tend to drift away from the activity when it begins to become monotonous and boring. Parents in general should look out for the signals that may point to this condition. This is important because early dictation of the condition will ease the transition of the child and enable the parents to seek guidance early so as the condition can be controlled.
