Introduction
Proposition/Thesis – Unsustainable practices including burning of fossil fuels by man leads to global warming as these practices emit poisonous gases and produce greenhouse gases responsible for global warming
Credibility – Global sea level has risen by 6.7 inches during the last century; particularly the level of rise has been twice during the last decade compared to the rest of the period (Church and White).
Goodwill – Understanding the negative consequences of global warming helps us to save the earth from the effects of dangerous greenhouse gases and thereby protecting our future generations from natural calamities
Preview – Now, I shall convince the audience about man’s contribution in promoting global warming. To begin with, I will explain some of the dangerous outcomes of global warming. Secondly, I will explain what actions of man are responsible for causing global warming. Finally, I will present certain statistics to explain the seriousness of global warming.
Reason 1 – Some of the dangerous outcomes of global warming
The earth has significantly warmed since the 1880s. Since the 1970s the warming has tremendously increased and the last 12 years have witnessed the warmest years ever (Peterson et al).
Satellite observations show that the quantity of spring snow covering the Northern hemisphere has significantly decreased in the past fifty years and the snow cover is melting at alarming rates.
Transition – Now that I have discussed certain negative outcomes of global warming, I will move on to show how the irresponsible actions of man lead to global warming.
Reason 2 – Man is responsible in many ways to cause global warming
Man produces electricity by burning fossil fuels. Over 75 % of the electricity produced worldwide uses fossil fuels (“SOTC: Northern Hemisphere snow”). Carbon dioxide along with many other gases released into the atmosphere contributes to global warming.
Plants take in carbon dioxide released by man into the atmosphere and store the carbon. Clearing of forests and grasslands leads to greenhouse gas emission. United Nation’s Food and Agricultural Organization reports that almost 30 percent of greenhouse gas emission is attributed to deforestation (Stubblefield).
Transition –Having discussed certain man made causes leading to global warming, I will provide certain statistics that reiterate the dangerous consequences of global warming
Reason 3 – What statistics tell about global warming
The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has now gone up by 34 % over the past three centuries. Scientists warn that if man continues to pollute the earth with carbon dioxide at the current rate temperature of earth will become hotter by 5.8 degree Celsius in AD 2100 (Josef).
More than a million species of different kinds have faced extinction because of global warming (Josef).
Conclusion
Review – Earlier I started with discussing the dangerous outcomes of global warming. Secondly, I explained how certain actions of man are causing global warming. Finally, I gave certain statistics to emphasize the seriousness of global warming that will motivate the audience to act immediately to protect the earth from global warming.
Proposed Action –Abstain from burning fossil fuels and educate the new generation about the negative effects of global warming. Teach youngsters to protect the environment by not polluting it.
Closing Remarks – Refer to Attention Getter
