Thank you for making the inquiries regarding the preferences and effectiveness of using enterprise social media platform (ESMP) to develop communication in the College of Business. In respect to your first inquiry, I found that the majority of Americans are using the platform without age restriction at the time (Elgan, 2015). However, these platforms are not being used more than the emails within the business sector. Elgan (2015) informs that growth of ESMP is increasing at the moment providing hopes for high usage in about a decade. The researchers postulate that using ESMP will be the leading mode of group communication in the near future (Elgan, 2015). The growth is attributed to the increasing social networking and marketing that attract businesspeople to make advertisements in the social media.
I evaluated some of the platforms being used by businesses and listed three of the most common ones. These platforms are Yammer, Slack and Convo (Hall & Chua, 2015). Yammer is a confidential social media platform that helps employees to cooperate with each other across divisions and places. Slack is a messenger app for teams, designed to make work easier, more efficient, and constructive. Finally, Convo is an ESMP for work communication to enable collaboration with teams.
The final response addresses your inquiry on the pros and cons of the ESMP. Essentially, the platforms link the various departments of business making them interactive and facilitating cooperation of tasks. This aspect implies that the employees’ voices are heard by the management depending on the topics being addressed by the media. It empowers the employees by allowing them to communicate with their seniors directly. According to Langer (2014), the employees can present potential faults and productivity concerns that may need attention from the management. Other pros include the capabilities to analyze employee trends by studying the platform and establishing innovative ideas that can improve the business. However, the model may be depicting such issues as cybersecurity problems that can destroy the reputation of the organization. Since most people are still using the email platforms, the ESMP may not have sufficient employee traffic to make it active. Finally, the platform must establish decisive guidelines to control and monitor the system in order to prevent misuse.
