In the other article, the study undertaken was directed at giving insights on emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) which is believed to be prevalent amongst the school age children in the United States. Studies have revealed that these emotional and behavioral disorders have been a major influencing factor to students dropping out of school due to incapacitation. Students who suffer from emotional and behavioral disorders would display symptoms which include; depression, conduct disorder, anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As a matter of fact, these behavioral disorders reported in these articles have also been found to have different treatment methods depending on the nature of the disorder. In the case of GAD and OCD the treatment method that was applied to treat the patients from these disorders was the use of psychotherapy tests which would be significant in alleviating the patient’s problem. However, these psychotherapy tests were performed under the unified protocol (UP) which postulates the modules to be carried out in psychotherapy.
The UP is made up of five important sections which must be administered to patients. These sections are directed at regulating emotional experiences and processing which includes; control processes and reducing maladaptive evasion amongst patients. Conversely, these five sections are administered after performing a module which is directed at improving readiness, treatment engagement and motivation. It is also important to note that during the treatment of these behavioral disorders, patients are also offered with an introductory module which seeks to enlighten them on the type of emotions and also helping them to comprehend these arousing experiences. The last part of this psychotherapy treatment involves a review on the progress made by the patients as well as developing strategies for relapse prevention. Hence, the results accrued from this treatment method for GAD and OCD includes; alteration of maladaptive appraisals, exposure, hindrance of experiential avoidance and modifying maladaptive action predispositions (James, 632). The UP treatment has been found to have positive results on controlling dispositional features such as worry, rumination and ritualistic deeds which are common in patients suffering from GAD or OCD.
Lastly, UP also helps these patients to identify situations which are avoided due to their perception of triggering uncertainty experiences. UP also helps to expose these patients to these situations which they would not have been able to if not for the treatment. Hence, this treatment method has beneficial results to the GAD and OCD patients. The treatment method adopted for EBD in the article is the adoption of Yoga lessons to patients so as to help them in relieving the symptoms accustomed with the emotional and behavioral disorders. However, the nature of the yoga lessons undertaken has been revealed to be using three main elements for treatment which includes; meditation postures and calm breathing (Naomi, 817). The study has disclosed that these yoga lessons would be very effective at suppressing the prevailing symptoms in the affected persons. It is believed that meditation element of yoga can offer a relaxation experience to patients thus reducing their levels of anxiety and depressions.
Meditation has also been proved to reduce stress to patients especially if they meditate before undergoing a perceived stressful event or activity. Meditation works by calming down the mind and also helping the mind to have a directed focus. The postures performed in yoga would include; back bend, forward bend, twisting poses and standing balance. These physical poses are known to increase strength and flexibility of the EBD patients (Naomi, 821). Finally, calm breathing by EBD patients is assumed to control the autonomic nervous coordination and mind focus hence it offers the patients a moment of relaxation which would be of great help to their condition. Furthermore, yoga is also believed to present the results of self control and self awareness to the EBD patients. This is due to the fact that yoga enables the EBD patients to improve their consciousness of their emotional nature using elaborate and practical techniques. The results facilitated by yoga lessons for EBD patients have been found to be occurring over a range of disabilities which are categorized as emotional and behavioral disorders.
