Crying is a natural reaction in human lives, and a sign for an emotional feeling. We cry since the day we were born, and it is a sign for the beginning of a new life so there is always a reason for our tears and causes that make people cry. In addition, our tears represent our feeling, and circumstances play a big role for making people cry. The article “Why Do We Cry In Planes” is written by Elijah Wolfson. He is the editorial director of Medical Daily and the International Science Times. Also, He is a Lancelot Health Journalism Fellow at the John Jay College Center on Media, Crime, and Justice. In Oct 1, 2013; his article was written in The Atlintic.com website. He discussed the reasons make people cry on planes due to the circumstances. Also, he explains kinds of tears and the reasons that make the travelers cover their tears and also talked about some benefits from tears.
We all prefer to cry in certain places that make us comfortable to cry in. Some of us cry on his bed and others cry in their restrooms. As a result, in a recent survey was conducted by airline asking customers about their feelings while they are on plans, they found that 55 % of their customers said: they turn to have more emotional feeling, when they are inside the airplanes, so there are a high percentage of people cries on airplanes . In addition, airplanes consider one of those places that make people cry because when they are on it, they have nothing to do for hours, which make them begin to think about their emotional feelings. For example, some people said when they are watching a movie on the plane, they cry faster than crying at home with the same movie.
However, some people prefer silent places to cry, so they can cry and no one can hear them. I believe crying with voice is the best way to relief and it help us feel comfortable. I also agree with the assertions in the article by Wolfson (2013) that people tend to cry when they are alone and there are no distractions that divert their attention from expressing the feeling of loneliness, separation, despair, or a sense of powerlessness. In retrospect, I am convinced that crying, complete with sobs and wails, provides an opportunity to release my stress to ultimately achieve a sense of emotional balance.
There are happiness tears and sadness tears . People tend to shed tears of happiness during reunions or appreciating memorable childhood moments. On the other hand, tears of loneliness are often associated with separation, loss, pain, or just hopeless. Sometimes when we remember a good time a smile is not enough to represent what inside us so tears help us to feel great. However, crying and having sadness tears help us to feel calm because when we are crying, our bodies clean up the toxic-chemicals that accrue which are a part of the sadness.
Some people prefer to cover their tears, so no one can see them. For example, they cry in the bathrooms under the shower tab to hide their voice while crying. (Wolfson, 2013). Likewise, he study revealed by Child (2011) regarding customers of airline Virgin Atlantic revealed that men are more likely cover their tears from others because they feel shame if someone see them crying. From the previous article, 41% men said they cover their tears under blanket from other passenger on the plane . In addition, Adult prefers to cover their tears more than children, because they don’t want to let others know their feeling at that moment. Also, women mostly show their tears because they always want to share their feeling with others. According to Wolfson (2013), “it certainly doesn’t explain why we cry when we’re alone, or in an airplane surrounded by strangers we have no connection to” (par. 10) which explain why most people do not like to cry in front of others.
In addition, causes of crying change as we grow. Adults, cry for serious reasons, which, as expounded by Wolfson (2013), they “cry in grief, or in reverence of the self-sacrifice of another, or in awe of the beautiful and sublime, or alone in our bedrooms, screaming internally at our own inadequacies. All these multifaceted experiences do, however, share a common underpinning” (par. 11). As children, crying could be attributed to seeking attention to the caregivers. As we grow older, we cry for reasons ranging from expressing dismay over losing something: a pet, a loved one, or even something we have grown especially attached to or of great value (life a newly bought cell phone or a necklace that was given as a special gift).
As a result, there are general reason make people cry and it change as we grow. As emphasized by Wolfson (2012), “in both adults and in children, “the prototypical situations that induce crying are always related to loss or separation, and/or powerlessness,” our experiences of these things just change with age. While, as adults, crying no longer functions as a means of keeping our caregivers close, it still retains a vestigial element of attachment—we keep crying past the point of its practical usefulness because of a deep, lingering lack” ( par. 13). I have experienced crying for all sorts of reasons. I could therefore attest that the contentions of Wolfson (2013) are true given that when I was young, I cry for a lost toy or just because I wanted to be embraced and caressed by my mother. Currently, I cry due to feelings of failure; of not achieving goals that are targetted; for losing a friend; or for fear of the unkown.
Despite the negative connotations of crying, I know that there are still evident benefits. One is that after crying, there is this feeling of relief and calmness that envelopes me. So tears are best way to relief from difficult situations. As emphasized, “our tears contain stress hormones and other chemical toxins. Frey took this as proof that crying is about the removal of stress hormones from our bodies” (Wolfson, 2013, par. 16). To approve that tears help our bodies to clean it from stress hormones, I will ask you a question, why you feel comfortable after you cry? In addition, people who always confinement their tears are more likely to get high blood pressure or Irritable Bowel Syndrome because when whose hormones stay in their bodies it will accumulate until they got those diseases. At a result, tears are important to clean our bodies.
