The series of photos are used to describe the relationship between diverse cultures and photography. The events recorded in the picture series are all set in bicultural settings, and their moods and activities are at this moment discussed below. For instance, the first picture from the movie ‘the American dream’ describes a couple in a kitchen. The kitchen furnishing is modern. The kitchen sink depicts the modernity of the kitchen. However, the utensils are antiques, showing that they were not sourced from the modern era. The lady standing is probably western, judging from her jawlines and height. The hair also adds emphasis to her place of origin. The photograph shows the difficulties faced when adapting to a different culture or country. From the magazine the Chinese man is reading, the photograph was taken in China. The lady, however, seems content with her new home by working in the kitchen, showing that she can comfortably adopt new bicultural changes.
The second photograph titled the visitor also gives further insight into the photograph series. From the posture of the man standing in front of the car and the line of his jawline, he is presumably Chinese. The man in the car is western, from the insight we get through the rear view mirror, he has a mustache. The mustache was common in the classical era of western civilization. The GPS tracker on the man’s car suggests that he is not well versed with the locality of the setting. There must have been some struggle from within the house, since the blinds in the picture have been tampered with, and the Chinese man looks tense. The man in the car has cold eyes, suggesting that he is either policeman or a contracted killer. In either way, the Western man does not seem to have any good motives. The tension between the two men seems more than just a shuffled look.it is hard to read the moods of individual across cultural norms. The aim of this photo was to create a scenario to show the unpredictability posed by different cultural realms.
The third photograph titled ‘downstairs’ shows two men in the same neighborhood. The two men in the photo are not of the same cultural background. The man in the driveway is probably western, from the look at his mustache. The tiles on the driveway are antique, showing that it is not a modern setting. The man on the ledge above is, however, Chinese, and he seems to have been expecting his western friend to arrive. The picture thus depicts cultural unity or intercultural friendship. Cultural unity occurs when people from different cultures get over their cultural differences and develops a mutual relationship. The man on the driveway has his hand on the left breast pocket, suggesting that he is right handed. From the texture of the driveway, it was raining right before the western man showed up. The fogginess of the photo also gives an added evidence of the downpour.
The fourth photo portrays an architectural touch of the Chinese and the western culture. For instance, the candle chandeliers were mostly used in the classical era of western civilizations. The chandeliers were also used by the affluent Chinese cultures for their ceremonies but not for house decoration. The dressing of the lady beside the piano has a hint of the western dressing, suggesting that she is of the western culture. Moreover, the architecture used to construct the fireplace and the house pillars is Chinese. The pillar art is the same as the one that was used by the Chinese to put up palaces for their Emperors. Due to the presence of the piano, the picture gets a touch of the western culture. The photograph also shows a Chinese man at the far end of the room wearing a classic tuxedo. The western cultures mostly wore tuxedos, but the Chinese man is wearing the tuxedo, showing a new adaptation of culture. The patterning of the floor rag where the lady is standing mushrooms in the Chinese art also shows a case of culture adaptation. In conclusion, the photograph shows that cultures can borrow from other culture.
Consequently, the scriptorium picture shows a Chinese man in a western library. But the library is furnished with western art furniture. The suit on the Chinese man is also western. The reading lamp has been decorated in the Chinese culture, and the mixture of different cultural touches shows that people can adopt a different culture, from the one they are used to. The mood of the man is curious, probably from reading western literature.it is possible to say that the western literature fascinates him as portrayed in the previous photographs, it is correct to suggest that the Chinese culture embraces drinking tea.
The backward movement photograph is set in a Chinese bedroom. The art on the bed and the hanging drapes were mostly used by the affluent Chinese to show comfort and wealth. The photograph displays art borrowed from two cultures, an important aspect of biculturalism. The woman in the picture has her torso facing the camera, a perfect mimic of the American painting of Christina Olson.The painting is one of the most celebrated of the American art. The integration of the American art and the Chinese art is a way of showing that even diverse cultures can merge their creativity to bring out a more desirable piece of art.
‘She is left holding a baby,' is a photograph that shows a mood of both resentment and love. The woman on the bed has given birth to a baby, who is intercultural begotten. The flowers on the table show the affection the Chinese man has on his western wife. The candles are a western way of showing tranquility, and the presence of candles in the room shows that the lady is content with her current being. The picture thus shows that even intercultural relationship can give rise to bicultural attributes. The bicultural attributes thus bring content and happiness.
‘Aint no trouble when she gone’ shows a tense mood in the bathtub. The mood of the Chinese man and the lady seem to have had a fight recently, and both are in the mood of resentment. The man has provided the lady with white flowers, a gesture of peace and apology, for the recent scuffle.in a similar situation, the photo thus shows that people can get past bicultural differences. The photo ‘black jack’ shows two western men and a Chinese man playing poker. The poker game seems to have taken a toll on the western man on the right. The man seems to be cheating on the game, by colluding with the lady waitress. The photo is hence criticizing cultural collusion.
The reverse auction and the absence of motherhood photographs show a flow of events that run the last photograph. The first photograph shows a lady being picked up by a horse carriage; the lady standing beside the horse carriage is waiting for the man walking downstairs. According to the American culture, the man is obliged to open the door to the carriage, to show his affection. However, the curtsey of opening the door for a lady is not well upheld in the Chinese culture. A man in the Chinese culture is treated like a king. The photograph, therefore, shows that bicultural forces are in play, as the Chinese man is adapting to the ways of the western culture. The man on the staircase is wearing a western hat, portraying the even dressing cultures are subject to bicultural influence.
On the other hand, the absence of motherhood photo depicts a serene mood of love between persons from different cultures. The presence of foods and touches from both cultures show that individuals from different cultures have a chance to enjoy life together. The mat on which the food sits is also decorated with both the Chinese art and the western art. The Chinese man is, however, holding a cup of coffee. The American culture favors the drinking of coffee even at odd times. The photograph depicts that the Chinese man is slowly adopting the culture of drinking coffee frequently, just as induced by His western spouse. Bicultural traits or behaviors can either be learned or inducted.
