I have always been the kind of person who pretty much stayed to himself and got attention from people no matter what, which did not come from hanging out with crowds of people because I’ve always been a loner. To stretch this point further, I remember when I started college at Miami Dade College in August of 2013. I did not know anyone but within being there for 10 minutes, a small group of people came up to me and introduced themselves. I did the same thing and from the point on I took that piece of attention I got and came out of my introverted shell for the purpose making a lot of friends. I was advised to go up to people and talk to them to get acquainted so I can have my own little set of friends, here I am this 19 year old traditional student trying to find his place among the younger students who were between 18 to 23. This was very hard because I could not relate to anyone, and it made me feel very much out of place there. I felt like this desperate kid trying to get people to like him, so he could get the attention that he wanted because it was the only way to feel like belonged. Person A was me as this introvert who stayed to himself but enjoyed getting the attention that I got and did not associate with anyone except when people associated with him, but I came out of that shell. I tried to be this extroverted person who could walk up to people and talk to them, but the more I did this, the more alone I was. I would go to my friends’ dorm room, at their behest, and hang out with them but there was no answer whenever I knocked which made me feel even more alone.
After doing this for half of the semester, I came to the conclusion that I was pushing too hard being this overfriendly person who was told to come out of his shell to make friends instead of waiting until people came up to him. Over time I realized that people in college are very busy trying to get good grades and set their future, which was easily understood because no one had time to hang out with everybody. Once things calmed down where people were not so busy, I went to my friends’ dorms and found out that they were still busy much to my chagrin. After being the person to initiate contact with people and friends only to be turned down or ignored for 4 months, I decided that I am just going to go back to being my introverted self which was Person B. Me in person B form basically I just kept to myself, and I only took care of and looked after myself only. If someone needed something, I did not lift a finger to help them, when someone needed a friend to walk with them to the store in the middle of the night, I did not volunteer, when someone needed a friend to tell them what they needed to hear; I kept my distance and walked right by them. After doing this for some time, a lot of the people that I was trying to hang out with would walk up to me when they saw me and ask, hey RJ how come you do not come to my dorm and see me anymore; to which I would reply, I have been very busy. Then, a few of my lady friends would stop me in the hallway, in the commons and ask me, how come you did not come to my party at my sorority house? Then it hit me; more people are inclined to seek you out when you ignore them and stop caring about getting attention. When I did that, people started sending me messages on Facebook begging me to hang out with them and go places with them. I started out as a person who was alone because he did not know how to relate to people. Nevertheless, I ended up staying the carefree introvert who had more friends than he knew what to do with. The solution, all I had to do was to stay my introverted self instead of trying to be something I was not meant to be at all.
