Black and Female Reflections on Graduation School by bell hooks, it is clear that black female students, particularly her, had to deal with racial prejudice throughout their college life. From the essay, it is clear that white professors made life difficult for the black female students to such an extent they would ignore them in class and give discriminatory comments in class. At the time, it seemed as the worst mistake of a person’s life time to pursue a degree in English in white dominated universities in the United States of America. The worst was yet to come because finding employment was clearly a far away dream
Hooks gives a variety of examples where she felt that she had been extremely degraded and disregarded. Not even comments from her fellow students who were white helped. She acknowledges the fact that there have been changes in the hiring process of more black professors but even this has not changed the racism and sexism that has been in existence over the years. The number of those who have been employed is still very lowSexist and racist messages could be conveyed directly or indirectly and this made the situation worse for black female students. Even the few black professors who were there were helpless and could do less if not nothing.
White students on the other hand encouraged black female students not to question, challenge or resist any form of discrimination. This was not practical as they did not know how it felt to be degraded. It is not surprising that hooks harbored feelings of murder. This shows the extent to which she was hurt. It was difficult for black female students at the time, in and outside of college. The English departments of most of universities pass for an epitome of white superiority, segregation and discrimination against blacks
