Introduction
Senator Bernie Sanders recently gave his victory speech at Wyoming Wisconsin rally in Laramie last April 5th 2016. The speech given by Senator Sanders in the rally talks about his victory in the Wyoming campaign for his bid presidency. The discussion will highlight the important points in his speech where relevant socio-political issues were mentioned. The important areas of discussion would the pro choices stated by the Senator, his position on gay marriage, min wage hike, free college, and free healthcare. These areas of concern will be examined and personal perception about the issues mentioned will be discussed as well. Based on the initial view of Senator Sanders’ speech, it is apparent that the president in running is offering American people the changes that the previous administrations had failed to address.
Bernie Sanders Speech
It was emphasized in Sander’s speech that he does not need a political action committee in order to raise funds because money in politics is a program where major industries donating money in political campaigns gains too much control and power. In addition, Sanders also mentioned about women giving birth in the country pointing out those in Wyoming that needs to go back to work after two weeks of giving birth because they simply do not have the money to stay on leave. The senator also spoke about free college, increasing minimum wage to $15 per hour, single-payer healthcare. On the other hand, Sanders also mentioned about removing marijuana from the list of scheduled drugs, which is not a popular opinion among his opponents. There were also mentions about closing the gender gap, equal pay, and paid maternal and family leave (Hancock). The senator emphasized the impact of the increasing gap between the rich and the poor and the declining e middle class because of the immense power and control that billionaires have over America (RallySpeech).
Opinion
There are several matters that Sanders have highlighted in his speech that I can agree with. For example, free college is one of the major issues that the youth is facing today because of the high cost of college education; the students are burdened with student loans that take years for them to settle. Education is a fundamental right of every individual and considering the fact that the government is spending more on every prisoner in the country than subsidizing college education; it’s about that higher education becomes a priority. In terms of the minimum wage, addressing the declining number of middle class means increasing their income, which starts at minimum wage increase. When it comes to pro gay marriage, the contemporary society is gradually welcoming the idea and with Sanders promising equality, it will not take long until pro-gay marriage will become widely accepted in America if he wins the election. More importantly, Sanders addressed the issue of healthcare access in America, which is currently under scrutiny because of the implementation of Obamacare. Healthcare is an important national issue that needs further evaluation given the unfavorable provisions embedded in the program and I agree that Sanders should its ensure 100% accessibility.
