A chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) is a senior management employee who analyzes business processes and identifies areas which require compatibility with established sustainability policies. The CSO role is strategic, meaning that he identifies shortcomings in business processes and suggests changes that are implemented in the future. Keene enterprises is a leading producer of electronics. In my role as a CSO, I have overhauled the production plant to incorporate new efficient equipment, revised the production process to minimize environmental waste and changed the packaging to recyclable boxes all in a bid to improve the environmental sustainability of the business process.
There is no specific academic qualification that one requires to become a CSO. However, because it is a senior managerial position, experience and a proven track record count for a lot. There are several competencies that you should possess to become a successful CSO. The first is a great passion for the field you are managing. You need passion for understanding the dynamics of the business and the changes required to make the business model sustainable. Secondly, you need to be assertive and an excellent communicator. As a CSO, you will spend most of your time listening to proposals or trying to convince other senior managers that your proposals are worth the budgetary implications. You have to be a clear communicator to get the desired approval. Lastly, you must be a good planner for both short and long term projects. Sustainability management is a continuous process that involves research, planning, implementation and assessment.
I enjoy my work as a CSO because it is challenging but rewarding. The remuneration is attractive because it is a senior management position. You can expect to make between $144,000 to 220,000 annually. The future looks bright for CSOs because more businesses are putting sustainability as a core business strategy.
