Dodge the Bullet is a delightfully written romance story with a bit of suspense. The author, Christy, used several points of views as the story evolved.
There are five main characters: Sarah, her two sons, Dodge, and the U.S. Senator interacting in various settings. Sarah is a mother still struggling with the death of her husband, while trying to establish a new way of life in Hailey, Colorado. Her sons are not too pleased with this move from the fast-paced Atlanta life into this small town, slow-paced quiet life. Dodge, who’s perceived as a social outcast, is a handsome, caring man who seems a bit rough and conceited at first. And lastly is the Senator, a devious businessman with selfish motives seeking financial gain.
After the family moves into their dilapidated vacation home, Dodge shows up to offer any assistance needed to help them settle into their new environment. At this time, Sarah isn’t aware that the Senator wants to purchase the Woodward ranch for a shady land developer. Therefore, she’s unaware of the dangerous plot forthcoming that the Senator has planned in order to force her to sell the property.
As the story unfolds, there’s a romantic spark starting between Sarah and Dodge. When the Senator continuously makes offers to purchase the ranch, Headstrong Sarah ignores him; and with the help of Dodge, continues to work on improving the property – though she and the boys have no previous ranch experience. Witnessing her persistence, the Senator becomes livid and takes drastic measures to get the land. And upon seeing what the Senator was doing, Dodge risks everything to protect Sarah and the boys, which further infuriates the Senator.
In the end, the Senator could not keep his promise to the land developer. Dodge had returned to Hailey to become a rancher as his father was. And dialogue was interesting as the romantic relationship between Sarah and Dodge developed.
Though told from various viewpoints, the author effectively exposes the struggling life of a single-mom, who’s also a recent widow, along with the welcoming of a new life with a new partner in a new town.
