The constitution of the United States of America provides rights of the citizens to bear arms. Firearms may or may not have anything to do with the constant rise in the number of homicides and other crimes that involve any form of firearms. The truth is, most of the firearms used in the commission of most crimes are either unregistered or have been reported stolen.
At the time when this right was guaranteed, the lifestyle was different. The whole purpose of keeping firearms was different. Most people got their food from hunting game. Hunting was one reason that made owning a form of firearm very important. Today, however, hunting for food in the United States of America is not very common. It is easy to shop for ready food. However, there are hunters who keep guns for the sport. For this reason, the main purpose of owning a firearm has changed. With evolving and increasing form of crimes, firearms are mainly kept for protection.
In the past, the national military was not so big. Today, the defense forces have grown in number to combat insecurity and even the number of personnel is not enough for the job. This makes it sensible for one to think of their safety. With the series of terror attacks, world wars and skyrocketing crime rates, it is up to the individual to protect his own family. This, however, becomes a problem when the owner of a firearm no longer uses it for defense but rather for offense. To curb the cult of violence, gun permits should be given only to those who have been successfully vetted and their integrity ascertained.
