Oscar has been described as a character that had an adventure of life. Of all the achievements in his life, he longed to find some true love, a love life where he loved a girl just as much as she loved him. It was quite a difficult journey for Oscar as most of his love stories ended up in a tragedy. It never mattered to him the kind of tragedy that would befall him, he was a go-getter and was ready to endure anything just to find and be with the love of his life. The misfortunes that Oscar finds himself in are hereditary, considering what his forefathers went through. He had been exposed to a family history where, despite the desire that the men had to love and fall in love, there were various hindrances that prevented the love from flourishing. Even though this was a big deal for Oscar, he never gave up in pursuing the love of his life. He knew he will have to fight and even risk his life, yet he had to taste and feel love.
Oscar encountered good and wonderful girls through his life stages. We are not told of any issue that Oscar had which could have created a resistance in girls towards him. we are however told of fuku, which is a curse from the Europeans. The curse made it difficult for good men like Oscar to find and maintain true love (Díaz 15). The curse made even women to stick to wrong relationships and with men whom they did not necessarily love. The curse also made men so jealousy that they would not just allow their women to follow their hearts and pursue the love of their lives. The curse brought in a form of confusion that made true love very difficult and impossible to find. Life in the new world was all about relationships of convenience where partners were joined by something that is far from love. Oscar stood out to prove that one could find and enjoy true love, irrespective of the length. All he wanted was a taste of true love, which he believed existed.
Apart from his love issues, Oscar was brought up in a family where each person seemed to be following a different path. They could hardly agree on anything, as each one seemed to be led by a different opinion. This caused them to migrate from one place to the other, with the hope that a change of environment will bring fortunes. Well, change was also good and always came with new experiences for the family. For instance, they were able to be exposed to different people who proved to them that life will not always be the same. We get to learn about an important character of Oscar, where he had a clean heart and never discriminated anybody (Díaz 45). The change of environment made him encounter a woman, who would serve as the love of his life. the possibility of her permanently making her his lover was cut shot, but he died a happy man, simply because he never gave up and finally found what he was looking for.
The title of the novel signifies the fact that Oscar had a brief wondrous life. This is because, all through, we are told of the struggles and challenges he went through just to find love. He was disappointed at the fact that whenever he thought he had finally found love, the girl proved that she did not love him as much as he did. Oscar would have given up, considering a series of such incidences that happened. Oscar was a man who nursed heartbreaks on a frequent basis, but still believed that there is a girl who will love him as much as he did. Whenever he met a girl that he was attracted to, he would seize the opportunity to let her know how she felt, irrespective of whether the girl was with somebody else or not. All he looked for was one thing, to find out if the girl loved him as much as he did. Distance did not matter to him, neither any impending opposition.
The wonderful yet brief life began when Oscar finally found a girl who loved him. Oscar knew he loved the girl when he realized the need of perusing him even after being thrown in prison for it. He was excommunicated from the town by the girls boyfriend, yet he never stopped thinking about him. True love is what Oscar had been longing for, all the days of his life. To him, it was better to die than live a loveless life. it was sad to learn that Oscar died in the process of chasing his love, but the ending was happy when we finally learn that he died a happy man. Oscar had lived a frustrated life, yet he was happy that he was able to enjoy sex and romance with a girl she loved and loved him in return. The girl gave herself to him despite knowing that he was attached to somebody else. Oscar died happy that he risked his life for a girl that risked her life for him. They fought their love to the point of death.
