Arguably, British Empire became one of the strongest well known empires in the history of the world. In fact it was one of the most influential colonizers in the world. Its colonies covered close to a quarter of the earth. British colonized North America, South America, Africa, Middle East, West Indies and Caribbean.
The development of worldwide colonies made Britain the world richest county. British were driven by different factors to the locations they colonized. The basic motives of British included need to expand their territory, desire to achieve material gain and to spread their Christianity. British benefited resourcefuly from the colonization. They received cheap raw material, which enriched industries in Britain. Labour was also one of the benefits, slaves provided labour. British empires received lots of money through taxation of the natives. Natural resources such as iron, gold and coal were exported to Britain.
British colonization had numerous effects on the locations they colonized. Actually some of the key areas that the British colonization affected include economy, culture, politics and religion. British colonization led to long-term and short term effects in its colony. Due to their colonization, numerous changes took place. The culture of the British is still in existent in its colonies. Additionally, not only did the economy of Britain strengthen, but also the locations and nations of those who were under their control.
The indigenous people were forced out of the land. For example on India were driven out of their land into unproductive land preservers. Infct up to today British still own land in their colonies, yet the some of the natives are landless.
Possibly, another aspect of change was brought about by trade. Trade can be viewed in both positive and negative perspectives. Trade gave the peoples colonized a taste of new products and technology. The advanced tools brought by the British, made life so easy. On the other hand trade caused misery to the colonized, this was through slavery.
Colonization by the British, gave the people colonized a chance follow Christian beliefs, at the expense of their traditional religion. Christisanity led to erosion of culture and on the other hand popularized the British culture
British caused totally destruction of balance in terms of power. In most colonies the natives had outstanding leaders and well defined territories. Arrival of British caused imbalance among tribes. They were divided to only two tribes, those who were friendly and those who were enemies.
British rule brought progress in the location colonized through introduction of postal system, railways and telegraphic communication. Furthemore they introduced health facilities and medicine, despite introducing diseases such as smallpox.
