Spirit AeroSystems
Vision
Spirit AeroSystems’ vision is to provide cost-competitive leading aerostructures as well as systems in the aero industry.
Mission
The mission of Spirit AeroSystems is to create a long-term value to its customers. It aims to do this by providing leading systems and structures in the aero industry achieved through a combination of competitive product and cost leadership derived from its people, knowledge, and technology (Romero et al., n.d.).
Spirit’s vision highlighted three important areas of focus. Firstly, the goal is to offer cost-competitive products in the industry and suggest it is one of the company’s aims to outdo its competitors because their customers are keen on purchasing components at low cost. By ensuring it produce at competitive cost, it is a position to win more customers. However, just before mentioning about cost-competitiveness, the company should have put in a more specific and significant target. For example, it should have mentioned that it aims to be the world’s number one in the aero industry as a non-original equipment manufacturer. The second item highlighted by the company is its aim to deliver leading aerostructures and systems. It does not look good to be one of the things to appear in the vision statement because the company is young and it is not only competing with established players such as the original equipment manufacturers but also non-original equipment manufacturers. It should select an item which whose achievement will be significant to the company’s future competitiveness. Further, the company’s vision statement suggest it mainly focused on the aero industry. The statement is too general. The company would have stated specific areas in the aero industry. For example, it should have mentioned about commercial and military applications.
In its mission statement, the company it aims to establish long-term relationships with customers by providing what it believes its customers desires. It mentioned that it was going to achieve this through competitive products and cost leadership by utilising technology, people, and knowledge. The ability to establish long-term relationships is more to do with identifying and consistently offering what the customer wants. The company should have chosen other descriptive words relevant what it can do to offer consistent products that will make their customers prefer their products offer those of their competitors. For example, the company should include something about being innovative and using R&D to come up with the highly competitive advanced product for the aero industry. The company’s capabilities are well-captured on their profile and include how they do their things differently, their products, innovation, and certification (Spirit AeroSystems, 2016).
The improved vision and mission statements should read:
Vision Statement: To be the world’s best company in the production of cost-competitive cutting edge aerostructures for not only commercial air industry and military applications.
Mission statement: To produce consistently innovative products for commercial and military aero applications through a combination of R&D, innovation, knowledge, and technology.
