Communication between partners is an essential part of any marriage. It involves getting to know each other, and creating bonds between partners. I can relate to self-disclosure in relationships, especially after reading the article “Can We Talk? Researcher Talks about the Role of Communication in Happy Marriages”. The writer discusses the importance of reveal one’s thoughts and feelings to gain understanding and develop relationships among people.
I have been married for six years, and I have a healthy relationship with my husband. We ensure that we create time to address issues affecting our relationship. Human beings have different opinions on various matters, and we embrace arguments since we know that people are prone to error. Most arguments are because of misunderstanding, and may lead to a marriage breakup if not well addressed (Schoenberg, 2012). We share many interests and enjoy talking about each other’s goals. Nara Schoenberg argues that couples who spend at least ten minutes to discuss issues in their relationship tend to have a strong relationship. My husband has a busy schedule as he works for twenty hours a day, but he spares some minutes to discuss our family issues.
Men often require more affection than women do, and it is every woman’s role to understand how to relate with her husband. I feel that most men reveal their affection through sexual intercourse while women require physical and emotional attention from their partners. Gender plays a key role in communication, and it is essential to recognize how an individual expresses his or her feelings (Lakoff, & Ide, 2005, p.12). Women are known to use fewer expletives and hedge more than their male partners.
Trust and effective communication are vital in building a strong relationship between couples. Partners should learn each other’s behaviors, and implement appropriate measures to deal with errors that arise. Disclosure helps partners to benefit from meaningful communication, which enables them to achieve a common goal in a relationship.
