Because the Events Management involves organising and directing various kinds of business, promotional and social events, it fits in various industries. In this case, my favourite industry would be travel and tourism industry in New Zealand. Travel and Tourism industry is one of the significant economic activities not only in New Zealand but also most countries in the world. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, the overall contribution of the Travel and Tourism industry in the New Zealand's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was NZD 31.8bn in 2014, which is equivalent to 13.7 percent of the GDP. In 2015, the industry was expected to grow by 1.6 percent to reach NZD32.3bn in 2015 (World Travel & Tourism Council, 2015).
The Travel & Tourism industry in New Zealand has significantly contributed to the creation of job opportunities in the country. In 2014, the industry generated over 100, 000 jobs, which constitutes 4.4 percent of the total employment. The number of jobs was estimated to grow in 2015 by 0.7 percent to create 100,500 jobs an equivalent of 4.4 percent of the total employment in the country (World Travel & Tourism Council, 2015). Travel agents, hotels, and airlines among other passenger transportation services create the jobs. The contribution of the employment also includes activities of the leisure industry and restaurant directly supported by tourism. The World Travel & Tourism Council also anticipates that the industry will contribute to 114,400 direct jobs by 2025, which is an increase of 1.2 percent per year for the next ten years.
The salaries offered in the Travel and Tourism industry is exciting. The salaries and wages offered in the sector vary between foods and beverage services workers and air transport industry. The air transport industry offers an average salary of $102, 000 while the food and beverage workers earn an average salary of $30,700 (New Zealand Government, 2013). Most of the tourism employees are part-time worker constituting 36 percent compared to the 19 percent of all employees.
Similar to other industries in the New Zealand and in the world, the Travel and Tourism industry is faced with various challenges. One of the biggest challenges is the climate change, which may affect the visitors' arrival to the New Zealand. Another challenge is the deteriorating global economy. The industry highly depends on the economic growth of the visitors' countries. The international competition is also one of the biggest challenges in the industry. This is also related to the fluctuation of the foreign exchange, which adversely affects the industry. This is because the popularity of various and modern destinations is continuously changing (New Zealand Tourism Strategy, 2015).
However, there Travel and Tourism industry is among the fast growing industries in the world. The emerging economies are the main drivers of the Industry's growth. As a result, this provides an important opportunity for the New Zealand's Travel and Tourism industry. In addition, the destination brands in New Zealand are reputable in the global market, and hence offer an excellent opportunity for the growth of the industry.
