In relation to contemporary psychology, the Big Five factors of personality refer to five broad aspects that offer explanation to human personality and account for individual differences. Ellison is highly emotionally stable and that is the reason why despite his father’s toughness on him, he was able to remain tough and competitive. Elision is also highly ambitious and that is why he is interested in taking all the businesses away from his competitors. As mentioned in the case, he does not like to collaborate but rather compete which implies that he is an introvert who does not welcome ideas from other people. Ellison is a solitary and reserved individual who prefers doing things on his own. From the case, it is mentioned that Ellison runs his business without soliciting ideas from other stakeholders including senior employees. While addressing stockholders in 2008, he openly attacked his competitors, partners, the government, and majority of people attending the meeting, which shows that he is unkind and cold-hearted individual. He is also a very secure and self-confident individual, which is evident from his childhood story when his father tried to lower his self-esteem by telling him that he would not succeed on anything. Despite hearing all these from his father, he grew to become one of the richest people in the world. Being solitary and self-reserved individual makes it hard for other people to work with him comfortably. Most of his employees leave the company for fear that they would not comfortably meet the set standards. Employees who do not meet his standards also lose their jobs. In addition, some employees remain at the firm because of the attractive pay and fear of recrimination.
Ellison’s social EQ is extremely low since he is not able to address people a professional and friendly manner. In a book written by Mike Wilson, he refers to Ellison as a ruthless person when it comes to dealing with corporate issues. His person EQ is averagely high since he able to achieve his high goals in life. People work for Ellison because he offers attractive compensation and some of his employees fear recrimination. He is also able to intimidate his employees by whichever means he deems fit to make them remain under his power. Some also work for him because the firm has a good reputation as the firm holds 49% of the database market.
