1) What type of research is this: Naturalistic observation, correlation, case study, survey? Explain your answer with two - three sentences.
This type of research is experimental and is neither naturalistic observation nor correlational. In this research, the independent variable is manipulated by the researcher in a systematic way. The relationship between “attention and self-control in the context of the delay-of-gratification paradigm” is to be determined. The research is typical of an experimental research because it gives solid proof of causal interpretations.2) What is the hypothesis for this research?
The hypothesis for this research is that if a child is able to resist the temptation of eating the marshmallow, then that goes to show that he can delay gratification and he has more self-discipline and control. Consequently, in the future, he is predicted to be more successful in his studies and career because of the self-discipline he manifested when he was younger.3) What is the purpose of the research? Explain, describe, predict or change? The purpose of the research is to determine the correlation between a child’s level of self-control or delayed gratification and his future success in life. It aims to predict the future of a child given the delayed gratification which he manifested in the research. 4) What are the variables? IV and DV
The independent variable is that which allows the child to distract himself from the marshmallow, which is his reward. The dependent variable is the length of time that the child is left alone in the room before he eats the marshmallow or the length of time of the delayed gratification.
5) If you were on the research review board, would you approve this research? Explain why or why not.
If one is on the research review board, I would approve of this research. Although the research deals with children, it does not deprive them of their rights. There is nothing harmful with the way the experiment is conducted. The experiment will not have a negative effect on the child. It does not subject the child to any emotional or psychological stress.
