Each country and academic institution has its own form of grading system. The grading system is normally widely accepted and acknowledged by the relevant authorities in the country. Grading is normally done with using alphabets e.g. A, B, C, D and E or using a range of numbers for instance 4.0-1.0. Each of the alphabets and number range denotes a certain class of excellence.GPA is the short form of grand point average. GPA is used as a measure to classify grades according to a student’s excellence. It is an average of the total grade points that a student has achieved. GPA is gotten by dividing the total sum of grade points that a student has earned with the total amount of hours used in order to get the grade. GPA is a widely used tool in the United States of America by potential employers and higher institutions of learning in order to sort out students for possible employment or admission. Several hypotheses can be formulated from the study and research of GPA. They are; GPA is not a real indicator of the excellence of a student. GPA is a fair means of judging a student. GPA does not take into account extreme points
Hypothesis testing deals with performing analysis on the data gotten from research with the aim of checking if the hypothesis is true or false (Kelly). The testing of the hypothesis first calls for a thorough research on the academic and social lifestyles of students. Hypothesis 1 states that GPA does not represent the real ability of a student. It may be leaving out some characteristics of the student for example social life and practical work. The GPA grading system does not also take into consideration other factors that may be affecting the student e.g. financial problems. Hypothesis 2 states that GPA should not be used to judge a student. This may be because of the fact that some students take more hour to learn than others depending on their mental ability. Hypothesis 3 states that GPA does not take into account extreme points especially the ones that are low. This may be leaving out some facts e.g. a student may have failed in important courses yet passed in other less important courses e.g. failing in professional courses. The hypothesis must be tested in order to check on their validity. The 3 hypothesis stated above are is a null hypothesis (Stat Trek) . A research must be done on the lifestyle of students in academic institutions, their capabilities and the time they use on their studies. The data gotten should be recorded and presented in the right means e.g. charts and tables. The data should then be analyzed accordingly using the various analysis methods which are average, t score, z score or proportion. An average test combined with a t and z test would be recommended to test the 3 hypothesis
In conclusion, all these hypothesis need to de first researched on, data analyzed accordingly and then the results of the analysis used to check if the hypothesis is true or false.
