Hotel Rwanda is a film that reveals an overview of the events in Rwanda during its ten-year war between the Hutu and Tutsi (Two tribes in Rwanda). The plot of the film revolves around Hotel des Mille Collines’ manager, Paul Rusesabagina, (a Hutu), his wife Tatiana (a Tutsi), and their children. From the movie, their marriage seems to experience problems because of a tussle between the two communities. Paul tries to bribe militiamen with alcohol and money just to keep his family safe. When the war begins to escalate, a military official takes orphaned children to the hotel and forces Paul to take care of them and their needs. Paul has an enormous task of ensuring Hutu soldiers do not get close to the children. In the end, through much struggle and bribing, Paul saved most of the orphans and fled the country together with his family. The film shows the sacrifice that Paul goes through; he risks his life for the survival of strangers. The paper will look into several organizational behavioral concepts stipulated within the movie and drawn a conclusion from it.
Values, ethics, attitudes, and perceptions
Personality and emotions
Paul has the personality of a real leader who fights for things that are right and does all he can to fend off any militiamen from the camp. He goes into a state of depression throughout the film because of the things he has seen. In one scene, Paul drives along a road and become stuck along the way. He gets out of the car to investigate the problem. Shock is on him when he see bodies lying on the road like a carpet. It makes him fear the militia even more; making him work tirelessly to ensure he flees the country with his family and the orphaned children. The trait of personality and emotions comes in handy while making a decision. Acting fast will avoid further damage or loss.
Communication and cross-cultural issues
The battle for power between the Hutu and Tutsi show the extent of a tribal nation and its effects. Rwanda genocide is one of the worst scenarios of war that lead to the death of over a million people in just a few months. The interest of a few people escalated to a war between two communities. The militiamen would have avoided all this if they deliberated over the issue of control and the effects of war earlier. Paul makes countless calls to the United Nations in a bid to raise the urgency of the matter. His efforts in it lead to the speedy and sneaky escape from the hotel.
Leadership
There are two traits of leadership in the movie. The leaders that led the Hutu and Tutsi community only thought of themselves and those adjacent. Their leadership is wrong since it insists their community in taking revenge and power over the country. The killing sprees agitated both tribes, and it becomes a battle of who kills more. Paul shows real leadership by struggling day and night to ensure the safety of his wife and the orphans. He takes the whole burden to himself and makes sure he shields them from attack and delivers them to safety. From both examples, a leader seems to carry the weight of the people or community. The tribal leaders have to deliver to their follows and have to do all they can so as to retain their positions. As for Paul, he strives all he can, at times not thinking of himself because everyone looks upon him for answers and freedom.
Conflict and negotiation
Conflict may lead to disaster if not resolved in its early stages. Conflict between the Hutu and Tutsi escalates to killing of more than a million people and bringing the country to a standstill in terms of economy and development. In this situation, the Hutu and Tutsi would have settled their differences in a set of meetings, through which the major stakeholders would come up with solutions to the problems.
