In a business environment, as in any interrelation situation, communication represents the channel of transmitting ideas, attitudes, opinions. However, what is significant is the way they are transmitted. How the information are transmitted orally is also an aspect related to communication. Gender, age, race or cultural differences could affect an efficient oral communication, because the individuals belonging to various groups come from different backgrounds and have developed distinct communication styles.
In a business communication situation actors must learn to take responsibility and autonomy for their communication style. They are fully responsible for the way in which they communicate and how they make themselves heard. Linguistic and the non verbal communication are essential aspects that need to be considered in this case.
Considering gender relations perspective, women appear as less confident than men in sustaining an efficient communication. Although their ideas might be efficient, the way they communicate might disadvantage them. Likewise, women are more sensitive to arguments and this might seem as a lack of confidence in their own arguments and abilities.
Another important approach to communication in the context of the organizational behavior is the attention to the communication rituals. This implies both an active listening of the conversation and an efficient communication style, which demonstrates that the conversation was well understood. As such, situations wherein people need to make compliments, apologize, or on the other hand mitigate, criticize or argue are representative cases for when they need to prove active listening abilities and pro-active communication/feedback skills.
In order for the audience to efficiently listen and understand what is being communicated, the language must be customized on the audience level of understanding and on its listening style. For testing the fact that the communication partners are actively listening, they must be engaged in discussion, by asking their opinion or arguments about the topics.
