Introduction
The network administrator has given instructions that there is a port no. 25rc1 from which a user has raised a ticket, complaining about the slow down of a machine and there is a certain message which is being received that highlights some issue with the hard disk. This case study is about the solution provided to the user and the steps taken to analyze the complaint and the necessary steps followed during the eradication of the issue.
During the analysis of the problem it was observed that this machine has windows XP installed and has proportional other hardware which includes a Pentium IV, Celeron M processor, 1 GB of RAM and an eighty GB hard disk which makes it clear that there are no issues with the system configuration.[ CITATION Mar06 \l 1033 ]
There was a drive check performed to assess the amount of data stored and the results showed that almost 78 GB out of the available 80 GB was used up and there was no format done for more than six months. Windows update was done only a week ago and the temporary internet files were also not exceeding the required limit. Finally a virus scan was done in order to find out any issues related to virus and the result was negative as no viruses were found. The probable issue seemed to be the desktop space taken by a lot of unused files and lack of drive defragmentation. [ CITATION Mar06 \l 1033 ]
Steps taken to resolve the issue
In order to resolve the issue as stated by the user the following steps were taken and a report is sent to the network administrator for the same.
Desktop Clean-Up – There were too many unused items in the desktop and more of the office document files were stored on the desktop, the user was asked to delete the useless files and the remaining files were systematically moved into my documents folder, to release some space on the desktop. Some of the heavier files were transferred to external drives (CD Rom and Pen Drives) to enhance the free space on the hard disk. The above auctioned also automatically removed the error which stated that the desktop is full, there was another warning received related to bad sectors.[ CITATION CAS08 \l 1033 ]
Scan Disk – A windows scan disk was run to find out the condition of the hard disk and see if there are any errors on the same, the result showed that there were certain bad sectors which were present in the hard disk and the same were required to be fixed, there were no other errors found regarding the same and in order to deal with the above issue, a defragmentation exercise was done as mentioned below.[ CITATION CAS08 \l 1033 ]
MSU-ES utilities were found and clicked on the desktop.
Disk Defragmenter was selected to be performed on the C: Drive
The defragmentation was completed and the report was viewed and saved, so that it may be sent to the network admin team, and the bad sector and clusters were fixed. [ CITATION CAS08 \l 1033 ]
Windows Update and Security Checklist – A windows update is run to ensure that the windows version is as per the latest one implemented in the org and the security checklist was updated with cookie Deletion, Anti Virus Run, Scan Disk Result, Disk Defragmentation, unused files archived and user update.[ CITATION Mar06 \l 1033 ]
Conclusion
There was a final check performed by allowing the user to restart the system and the system readiness was observed to be improved by almost one minute, the user was given general maintenance information related to regular checks, scans and a feedback form is filled by the user to provide a feedback on the service provided.
