Idle No More is a native rights movement that was developing since the time when the government of Canada passed a bill which was referred to as C-45 which entailed the provision to affect environmental safety and the sovereignty of the indigenous population.
Idle No More movement had several distinctive characteristics. The first and most profound characteristic was the fact that the movement was led by women. It is also a democratic movement in the sense that all its operations have been decentralized to the grassroots. The groups of people who belong to this group comprise people of common identity and they have a similar history of the nation of Canada. It is also a liberation movement that is fighting to include the indigenous people in national activities. Through their voice, it became the first instance to find black people in the media.
Idle No More movement was sparked by the government when it passed a C-45 bill which threatened the environment. This bill makes it easy for people to encroach the natural lands for development; it also brings down the number of projects that need environmental assessment. It also seeks to change the act that has been protecting the habitat since 1982.
The proponents of this movement see a clear link to the controversial tar and sand industry, which needed the putting up of oil and gas industries through the First nation’s territories. The reason for the establishment of this movement was due to their inability to present their issues to the House of Commons.
The Idle No More movement is directly related to C-45. Their relationship is seen as the movement was set up to counteract the passing of the C-45 bill which was set to destroy the indigenous land and its sovereignty which included the water. The passing of this bill was going to witness the diversion of water sources to pave way for the setting up of industries.
