Categories Essay Example

While making decisions on a day to day basis, I often categorize people into trendy, fashionable and possibly rich people and also as people who are likely to be highly successful and having good jobs.
Though these categories are generally formed in my mind in different situations and are not related to each other at all. The primary basis on which I form these categories is the appearance and the look and feel of the people that I meet or see.
Whenever I see people who wear seemingly expensive yet very attractive clothes, carry latest accessories and gadgets etc., my mind automatically recognises them as possibly rich and fashionable. This situation then alters the way in which I interact with them and dictates the likelihood of me maintaining contact with them over a longer period of time.
The second category is of people that I generally see as being very professionally dressed, always being on the phone or laptop and sounding business like, and seem very knowledgeable during interactions. After such a category is formed in mind, I try to interact with such people in a very diligent and smart manner and do not say a lot of things which may not mean anything.
So, forming categories affects my decision making and communication style with the people of such categories. For the first category of fashionable and rich people, I enjoy their company a lot more and try to attain information about their personal lives so that I can maintain contact later. For the second category of successful professionals, I behave more diligently and try to present the smartest side of me while interacting with them so as to impress them and gain knowledge about various topics that they discuss.
