In this competitive age everyone wants to be at the top and achieve the best in life. This motivates and urges students to do well academically so they can get a good job. In order for them to get through to University and professional courses it’s necessary to get high scores. Therefore they are under pressure from teachers, parents, peers and even high goals set by self, to get good grades.
The cause of pressure can be parents who want their children to perform well academically and get good results, so their children have a secured future. It can also be due to financial insecurity when the child knows that the family may not be able to support well, and to get a good job there’s no other way but to study and work hard. The pressure can even be the fear of failing and getting embarrassed. But the effect of excessive pressure on students is that they can have high stress levels, lose their sleep and become discouraged by the overwhelming work load. To accomplish more in a less amount of time may rob them of their free time and cause physical exhaustion.
The pressure put on students to do well does help them achieve success in school and later in life. But if its beyond what they can handle, it may lead them to cheating and other wrong things or high anxiety and low self-esteem. Therefore its important to encourage and motivate students.
