In my opinion, Carlos performed as a really good manager in this situation. First of all, he did not take any personal sides. Second, he was thinking of the company's welfare. He realized that Rita and Juan would probably leave anyway. He was shrewd enough to understand that the reason why they came was not because of their relationships with the new co-workers, but because of their wish to quit. Carlos was very wise in his conversation and it was obvious that he knew the situation very well.
Carlos did well by pointing out that Juan and Rita are good employees. Still, he did not agree with them when they started accusing other employees. He did not take sides, which is a feature of a good manager. He only listened to them and expressed his opinion in a calm and polite way. Carlos realized the real reason of Rita and Juan's visit. And, although he liked them as good colleagues and maybe even as friends, his professionalism did not allow him to close his eyes to the core of the situation. It was not he himself or Juan and Rita he had to think of, but the company.
I do not think I could have handled the situation better that Carlos. He is a really good professional. I agree with him that Rita and Juan's suggestion was a bit unethical. And he dealt with this issue in the best way possible - he did not accuse anyone, he did not raise his voice, he just listened to what they had to say and made conclusions. He now knows that he needs to be very careful about other employees. But he is confident in himself and he knows that he will find a way out.
