Chapter 6
- What is important to know in this chapter for quizzes? (Use this to record your text notes. Be specific, clear and thorough for your own benefit.)
It is important to realize that effective speeches have to entail thorough research. Relying on personal knowledge and experience to give a speech, in most cases causes the overall quality of the speech to be poor. Gregory explains that relying on one’s experience makes a speech to be dull and in most cases inaccurate (Gregory 100). Using of research material makes sure that the information that is presented in speeches is factual and credible because it is supported by sources. However, the finding of research material is a task that has to be performed skillfully. First one has to have a purpose statement that guides the research that one is conducting. This ensures that one is able to narrow down to the sources that are required for the topic that is being addressed. The second important thing that one should be aware of is that there one has to engage in research far in advance before starting to give a speech. This allows one to have the time to consult different sources so that the research is not haphazard and inadequate. In addition to the finding of research material, it is important to understand that there are various misconceptions that are evident among researchers. One of the most striking misconceptions is the idea that web research resources are faster and accurate. However, this not the case because these web resources provides a wide range of information which is time-consuming for the researcher.
- What did you learn that you didn’t know before that can help you to become a better presenter or public speaker?
I learned that web resources are not fast and efficient as I thought initially. It is better to use books because books are right on point provided one has a well-defined purpose statement for the research.
- What did you not understand or would like to have explained better?
I would like some explanation about how to make efficient phrases when researching for articles and periodicals in various online library databases.
