Information system
An information system is a collection of technical components and human factors that are tailored to facilitate information management in an organization. The key components include the hardware, software, data, people, procedures and the feedback that is used to inform the subsequent procedures (Rouse, 2016).
Availability: information should always be readily available in the desired form when needed else it will be useless.
Reliability: information provided by the information system should be trustworthy. The facts provided should be accurate and verifiable. Incorrect information will result in a bad decision making.
Concise: information provided by the system should be to the point. Not too much or too little.
Timely: information should be delivered to the right person, to the right place and at the right time to maintain its relevance.
Understandable: information provided to the receiver should be in the correct form and format to enable proper and accurate interpretation.
Relevant: information provided is only useful to the organization only when relevant information is provided to aid in decision making (Markgraf, 2016).
An application is a computer program or a set of computer programs that execute on systems software with an aim of providing certain services to the end user. They include web browsers, word processors email client and many others (P, 2008).
A computer-based information system is a system that leverages the computing technologies to manage data and information digitally. The system relies less on human and more on the computing technologies in collection analysis and storage of data (Pérez-Cedano, 2016).
The difference between computer-based information system and application is that a CBIS is a collection of networked computer hardware and software that collect data, transmit and process it to provide a specific output. The application on the other side is a computer program that is found on the user computer (Gallagher, 2011).
