Social and romantic relationships are often characterized by happy moments as well as sad ones. The novel Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen is an example of a novel that contains social constructions that go through the highs and lows of social relationships and interactions between members of society and there is no different. The social and romantic relationships the reader encounters are subjected to many perturbations that are created by temperaments exhibited by the characters. The social standing of the members of this society greatly contributes to how they treat each other, and this leads to the happy as well as sad moments that exhibit the attribute of self control among some members of this society. The feelings and views of all the members’ impact, in one way or another, the way others bring out their personal attributes and to this regard, the difficult situations brought out help in seeing the levels of self control of the members in question.
There are a number of characters that can identify with the statement "I may have lost my heart, but not my self-control." At one point, Jane receives the bad news from Miss Bingley who is writing on behalf of his brother. She writes to Jane breaking up with her on behalf of her brother. Jane gets heartbroken and, therefore, decides to go on to stay with her aunt and uncle in London in order to get over her broken heart and disappointment. She at the same time wants to see Mr. Bingley. Her thought of leaving may be a good thing to do on her part so that she gets time to think over her predicament. She may have lost him and her prospects of ever getting married, but this was not going to put her down. She had to be in charge of her actions and even though she may have lost him or so it had seemed; she was not going to lose her self control and worth. While visiting the city, Miss. Bingley pays her a visit and behaves rudely towards her and her prospect Mr. Bingley fails to visit her at all. She is a strong woman having taken in all rudeness because when it comes to matters of the heart, it is rather difficult to deal with such situations, but she did manage.
The theme of self control is one that cuts across many of the author works by this author. A close reference can be made to Emma, another of her novels. There are characters that can identify with the statement aforementioned. One good example is Harriet Smith, a close friend of the main protagonist Emma. She is easily led by Emma to believe in her matchmaking escapades. Harriet gets into believing that Mr. Elton is into her but gets heartbroken when she learns that he has a keen eye on Emma. Harriet gets devastated at the sad reality that Mr. Elton is not interested in her because Emma had made her believe that he was indeed interested in her. Her emotional turmoil made her feel very heart broken, but she took charge of herself and she got over Mr. Elton at the end of it all.
It becomes apparent that most of her characters are made to go through such situations in order to bring out the way self control can give a person some sanity. Whenever there is a problem on matters love, people will always feel like they have hit rock bottom, more especially when the people they love make them sad. Jane was love struck and at the prospect of losing the man she loved and wanted to get married to, she was on the verge of losing it but then set to take charge of her emotions and, therefore, practiced self control. The same can be said about Mr. Collins the moment Elizabeth turned down his marriage proposal. These are but examples of characters who maintained a strong sense of self control even in the middle of an emotional situation.
