While education seems to be a tough nut to crack to an outsider, it really is an easy thing to do for an insider. For most people writing a course work implies thorough reading of books and constant rewriting of one’s paper. With the Internet, however, the approach is different all the way through. All the resources in the world are now available online, making the life of an average student as painless and smooth as never before.
Evident advantages introduced by the unlimited access to World Wide Web are now blackened by the stain of plagiarism. The main argument of the article is that information abuse has taken the form of brutal ‘copy-and-paste’ and copyright violation. Of course, we blame students for utter disrespect, but they are actually not responsible for it. We can’t escape frustrating yet obvious consequences either. The digital age has created favorable circumstances for information mistreatment, building the chain “free access to information, enjoy it – information for free, take it – information of no one, make it yours”.
The problem appears to be irreversible, as more and more students are being trapped by the desire to leave difficulties behind. Writing is no longer needed, change a few words and the text belongs to you. Moreover, current situation seems to be hardly manageable. In a few years’ time it will either be taken for granted or severely monitored. Since the scale of plagiarism is constantly growing, we have to search for methods of securing information and establish some restrictions on the access to valuable resources. The simple thing to start with is to help students realize that stealing intellectual property of others they deprive themselves of any sensible justifications and, most importantly, break the basic rules of fair play.
