In my home, the field of Child and Youth Care has seen unprecedented growth and change during the past decade. Now, the child and youth care sector is given special attention and care by the government institutions and companies. Currently, there are vacancies and more opportunities to be effective and in request to the areas of this scoter because there are a lot of available jobs. Furthermore, the employes worker are not qualifies to this career. Therefore, the program I would like to major in at Humber College is Child and Youth Care, which is a degree that qualifies students to work in various organizations in different sections with child and youth in society and in community development. In order to have a clear description about the major this essay made to have a comprehensive understanding about the program, job opportunities, and job description.
According to the Humber College website, the Child and Youth Care program equips one with skills needed in working with children and youth development programs (Humber College, 2015). The program covers areas that relate to child and youth care. The subject areas covered include “psychology, sociology, community development, political science and education” (Humber, 2015 para. 6). The course consists of theory and research work, both aimed at with skills in therapy, child development, counseling and preventive care. The course focuses on issues affecting children and youth with practical lessons in play therapy, handling abuse and counseling (Humber, 2015). Students have the option of specializing in “youth justice and advocacy, social policy and research, approaches to care, community development and youth engagement, and international perspectives” (Humber, 2015 para. 10).
There are numerous job opportunities available for those with these qualifications. According to The National Association of Childcare Workers, child and youth care workers can work as primary caregivers, therapeutic professionals, teachers of social skills, social workers, standard monitors in institutions dealing with children, advocacy and research (Frylinck, 2015). There are numerous possible positions for graduates of childcare, both in the public sector and private institutions.
The job description of a child and youth care worker is to support social, educational and personal growth of children and youth (Prospects.ac.uk, 2015). Youth and child workers support the children and youths in schools, hospitals, social centers/homes, colleges and other social centers. In addition to social work, child and youth care workers can participate in research work and other child development programs. Many Non-Governmental organizations have programs which require the support of a child and youth care specialist. During traumatic situations, these workers support children through counseling.
The program of Child and Youth Care is an essential course in every community. The course provides individuals with essential skills suitable for working with children and youth. There are numerous job opportunities available for these graduates in social work and research institutions. Working as a child and youth care specialist is a fulfilling job as one gets to influence the society through children.
