China town in Los Angeles is a place to visit for a taste of Chinese culture. I have been hearing of the place and one bright afternoon, I decided to visit. I was not sure about eating their food, but I simply decided to take a tour with the hope of learning more about the Chinese culture. The walk through china town was like a tour in one of the beautiful towns in china that I only hear about. I was particularly interested in their cultural dances and got amazed at the flexibility they expressed. The beats, the runes and the dances reminded me of some china movies I watch on the screen. I was amazed at the fact that I was now watching them life and not just a small portion is usually shown in the movies. I could almost move my body as I observed beautiful women shaking their bodies gracefully.
I moved to the next place, which was still in the arts and culture centre. Here I was exposed to the great acrobats of china performing what they knew best. The breathtaking moves made wonder if the young men and women had bones in their bodies. I felt like they would break anytime but was reminded that this is a field of their expertise. The men and women engaged in the acrobatic moves were slender, which kept me wondering whether they eat, the exercises they engage in on a daily basis to maintain their flexibility and body shaped. I compared their body sizes to the fat bodies that were part of the American culture. Just as I was thinking about the same, I came to realise that in china, you will rarely encounter people with fat bodies. I became even more interested in their food culture, which a believed was the main reason for their slender bodies.
I had never eaten real Chinese food apart from the noodles, which I usually prepared the American away, I was therefore not ready to experiment eating things I did not understand. I, however, inquired if there was a place I could be exposed to Chinese foods and know what they are composed of and how they are prepared without necessarily being compelled to taste. I was directed to the foods centre where I discovered a lot. Just when I thought we have spices in America, I discovered that what we got in our stores is simply a shadow of the real thing. I was shown many spices and seemed like a specific spice prepared each food category. My biggest question on the spices was how they were obtained and discovered. I was told that each day, a spice is discovered by simply mixing different food components. Most of them were obtained from roots and leaves while others were improvised from common foods.
I also discovered that chilly was part of Chinese food accompaniments. Chilly is an important ingredient, which the Chinese believe aids in digestion as well protecting them from acquiring different lifestyle diseases associated with food. Chilly is part of the weaning foods that children are exposed to at a young age. The children therefore grow up loving and eating the chilly. I also noticed that fat is not really an important ingredient in their cooking process. I imagined how tasteless their food could be without fat. One of the attendants convinced me to taste some of their delicacies that were not prepared by fat. I stated that I could not eat Chinese food because of the chilly and the spices, but was convinced that I can get some with no chilly, less spices and still without food. After being convinced of how the food was prepared, I choose to eat the nodules, which I was familiar.
After tasting the nodules, I decided to visit the sports center. Of all the sporting activities I watched, I enjoyed watching karate/taekwondo. This is a martial arts activity that is not only for self defence but played for leisure in china. I have always desired to know some taekwondo skills, especially in such an environment where there is a lot of insecurity. More interesting to the sporting activity was the sound produced as one made a hit. As I dressed up to be given some taekwondo skills, inquired why those involved in the activity had to produce the sound and if I will also have to produce it. I was told it is not necessary but has a religious significance. The sound is supposed to involve a certain god for strength as one fight.
` The last place a visited was the religious centre. I also learned that the attitude and commitment that the Chinese had towards religion made them live prosperous lives. I was able to learn about the Buddhist religion and the reason believers have to shave their heads clean and dress up in their traditional read clothes. I inquired more about the position of women in Chinese culture in terms of religion. This was because I rarely saw women participating in indigenous religious rituals of Buddhism. By the end of my tour through china town, I had learned a lot, which made me change my perspective towards the Chinese culture..
