Zhou Shuren was born on 25th September 1881 in an aristocracy family in Shaoxing. Lu Xun was his pen name. He was a major Chinese literature writer of the twentieth century. Most of his works were fictional. In 1902, the government sponsored him to study medicine in japan. He did not decline the offer. However, he thought that medicine could repair bodies and yet what the Chinese needed most was to be awakened politically. So he decided to study literature. He wrote several works in orthodox Chinese. He led several organizations that were determined to stop violation of rights and create political awareness.
The use of literature contributed to the growth of nationalism in the 19th and 20th century. Literal works were written in Chinese making it easy for the people to understand. Chinese were submissive and quiet but inwardly cunning and evil. Literature was used to enforce religion and create a strong sense of ethnicity. He blamed the backwardness of china on the Chinese terming them as spectators of their own annihilation. Any act that was evil was strongly protested by Chinese being led by people like Xun. This created awareness in china and the people started being keen on any political move. Chinese were called upon to rise against violation of their rights. Literature also encouraged the Chinese to be patriotic. This further enhanced the spirit of nationalism.
Through literature, Chinese were called upon to stop being submissive and question any evil act that was done by leaders. It also encouraged the Chinese to stop from being lazy and work hard for national development. The leadership was greatly questioned. This made the Chinese to stop any kind of evil and transform the leadership to a kind of leadership that was acceptable. Chinese became very patriotic to their culture and country. They started working hard to develop it. These steered the country forward socially, economically and politically. This made china to be the great nation that it is today.
