Have you heard about sexual selection in universities? University is the school that students attend after graduation from high school, in order to complete higher education. This is a significant undertaking for all students, both men and women. There are always requirements for students hoping to get into university. For some special academic areas, there can be more strict requirements. The number of accepted students depends on each university’s criteria. Some people think it is a good idea for universities to take the same number of men and women for every major. However, I disagree with this view as, if they adhere to this policy, the university will lose money. Moreover, their reputation will suffer and the number of graduating students will decrease.
Firstly, the university will lose money. The amount of money received from students’ tuition fees is an important factor for a university to improve its buildings, researches and position. In line with the equality policy, if only a small number of one gender applies for a course, the university can only accept a small number of the other gender. This means, clearly, that the school will have to reject many students who have applied. Consequently, there will not be enough students in each subject. In turn, the university will lose money and, therefore, the policy doesn’t make sense for the university. For example, Prince Sultan University in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia had this policy in place five years ago. Only five males applied for the cooking program. As a result, the school could only have ten students enrolled on the subject for that year.
Secondly, the policy will mean that the university’s reputation could go down. Reputation is a significant matter if a university is to be among the dominant universities around the world. If the university has this policy, there will not be enough students. As a result, the university will cancel many classes and this, in turn, will cause teachers to have to be put on lower salaries. Consequently, many good teachers will leave the school and there will not be any good teachers left. This, in itself, will cause the school’s reputation to suffer. For instance, King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia held this policy for the language department which was the strongest department in the university. Consequently, all the excellent and popular professors left the university. Because of this policy, the university decided to decrease the salary for teachers because there was not enough students for most classes and, as a result, teachers left.
Thirdly, the natural properties for each gender such as bodily strength and leadership power in the working technical area should be taken into account. Qualities such as these are required for some majors like science and engineering. Therefore, men are more acceptable than women for those majors because women are more friendly and emotional than men. For these reasons, women are less proficient than men in controlling and managing. Some women around the world have achieved well in male dominated majors, but not many. According to AAUW (2010), in 2007, the percentage of graduating men was higher than the percentage of graduating women for Bachelor degrees in selected science and engineering fields. For example, my pervious university made exceptions for women if they could be accepted for technical majors and be able to fit in with them. The percentage of women who disagreed with this point was higher than those who agreed. This evidence suggested that it wasn’t practical for the university to have this policy because there would be a limited number of students graduating from technical majors.
In conclusion, the policy in question is not good for universities because it can damage them financially. Furthermore, their reputation will also suffer and the number of graduating students will go down. Therefore, most universities have opted out this policy. Also, they make every effort to be strong universities in the world in every range of major. Therefore, it is a dream for everyone who wishes to obtain a higher education certificate.
