INTRODUCTION
The world is composed of numerous people with different types of behaviors. In a normal setting, people can meet different characters that from time to time. It is, thus, important for a person to know how to deal with different stereotypes that exist in the society in order to survive. Negative stereotypes are thus dangerous in human development and individuals can be affected permanently by the stereotype that they grew with about them in the society. Just like there are different species with different habits, stereotypes also have different habits that can be good or bad depending on the individual (Gould 3).
ANALYSIS
The discussion will be looking at the roommates stereotypes. There are three types of roommates. The stereotypes given to the roommates was according to their behavior in while in the hostels and outside the hostels. The first roommate has a snitch stereotype. The roommate liked to take discussions in the room outside to parties that are not concerned about the issues happening in the room. The roommate breached every person’s trust through the spread of information that is meant to remain confidential within the walls of the room. The stereotype proves the theory that “species are related by the physical connection of genealogical descent” (Gould 4) according to Charles Darwin in that, the roommate’s behavior was as a result of the life encountered in the After doing that, the roommate used to deny any accusations that would be laid on him about the snitch behavior. According to Charles Darwin, species has different behaviors in their bit to struggle for survival in the environment. The actions of the roommate where seen as actions based on struggle to survival since the actions were taken in a bit to win a something. According to Charles Darwin, species fight others and kill others to survive. The stereotype given the roommate is negative since when the individual could realize about, there is a possibility of the person suffering from low self-esteem realizing how friends could not trust him. The stereotype was based on the actions of the roommate thus justified to the classification (Gould 5). An example of a hyena that can kill its babies due to its hanger for food to survive. The exact behavior is seen with the roommate who looks at using the other people’s words to earn credit.
The second roommate stereotype was based on the behavior in the room. The roommate was given the stereotype of the dirty roommate. The roommate used to take a complete week before taking a shower and changing clothes. As a result, the roommate used to have a strong stench that other roommates hated since it made every person dis-comfortable. This is a negative stereotype and it can impact on a person positively. For example, the individual could choose to ensure that other roommates feel different by acting opposite to the stereotype. Since the stereotype can create a guilty conscience on an individual in such a way that, the person would need to ensure that the stereotype is proven wrong by acting accordingly. The type of action is similar to the way species act. Members of different species cannot bread with individuals belonging to different species (Gould 4-7). The roommate with the dirty stereotype cannot easily match the roommates with clean stereotypes. It will be hard for the two stereotypes to match since each individual will protect their image to other people. The stereotype thus will ensure that the dirty roommate changes to fit in the society as others.
The third roommate has a geek stereotype. The roommate loves to spend time reading books and going through the internet to study new ideas. The stereotype of this particular roommate impacts on the other roommates positively as they look to have such a behavior to ensure that their grades get higher. The geek roommate always appears on top of the class in every test and exam taken in the institution. Additionally, the roommate a sound argument on matters, does not take actions without thinking about the consequences and always has a strong will to decision making. Just like a person would find different species in the environment, different types of people exist in the world (Gould 1-7). The geek stereotype roommate initiates a different characteristic that exists on few individuals in a group of many people. In a pride of lions, only one lion acts as the savior. The male lion is the strongest and whenever there is a case of danger, the lion would step up and protect the entire pride. This does not mean that the other lions cannot fight. The stereotype placed on the male lion as the powerful lion in a pride of many lions creates that notion. The same application exists with the geek roommate who always had to step in in decisions that would harm the members when made hastily.
CONCLUSION
Stereotypes have different impacts on the people depending on the degree to which they are associated to a person or a group of people. Different stereotypes create different notions about persons. The stereotypes that individuals bear in the society depend on their early lives. All these notions are important for survival in the society. The three different stereotypes portrayed by the roommates prove the theory of species and their difference in behavior and characteristics.
