Arguably, in reality, students in the world come from different backgrounds. Each one of them has complex problems, and some completely don’t have any idea on the way to deal with them. Perhaps, the most important reason why students come to school is to learn, but it is important to observe total growth of the student emotionally and psychologically. In order to achieve academic success classroom management should be considered. Classroom management refers to the process of ensuring that lessons in classrooms run in a smooth way regardless of the disruptive behavior by the students.
Students are believed to be disruptive; hence it is important to ensure that preventive measures to disruptive behaviors are put in place. As a matter of fact the students should be empowered towards improving their academic performance, behave appropriately and to follow instructions from all departments in the school. Classroom management strategies help the student to develop in numerous ways and to encourage them to think critically. Management of classroom in this scenario refers to the issues of refereeing, facilitating, supervision and academic discipline (Charles, 2010).
The society currently is too complex; in addition the students also are becoming too sophisticated. It is believed that the teachers are the only people who can handle students; therefore teaching has become a challenging profession to undertake. The increase in student population, legal constraints, sophisticated students and inventions and innovations compound to the problematic issues of dealing with managing the students. The teachers in the modern society must be always prepared to deal with the problems. Teachers should win the hearts of the students fully. This is achieved through personal interaction between the teacher and the student. Research supports the perspective, in that the teacher who develops strong relationship with students experiences best academic performance and minimal classroom misbehaving (Lee, 2005).
According to Marlene Carter and Lee, assertive discipline is the best approach to use in classroom management. In this approach the teacher has total control of the class. In most cases it is called take-control approach .The teacher takes control of the entire classroom in a firm and positive manner. Teachers should establish directions and rules that perfectly define the extremes of unacceptable and acceptable student behaviors. Additionally, he should teach students directions and rules, and request support from administrators and parents when assistance is required in handling student behaviors.
Rules, regulation and procedures are very important in management strategy to be used elementary classroom. Debatably, elementary classroom can be converted into fantastic learning environment. This can achieved when teachers have classroom management skills, rules, and be optimistic that every child has the power to succeed (Lee, 2005). The rules help in creation of a predictable atmosphere that encourages children to apply self-control and limit disruptions in classroom. The teacher has an obligation in teaching children to be responsible in making choices. In addition children should know that they will be held accountable for their bad actions and behaviors.
In formulating the rules the teacher should involve students. In most cases teachers who formulate rules and directions with their students is contend that the children are likely to adhere to the rules. Probably students can be involved in the formation of direction and rules by allowing them to brainstorm as a group or class (Darlene, 2005). In fact they should given freedom to discuss on their goals and why they came to school. As a teacher ensure that the rules are stated in a positive way. For example, a child states “we should not forget our books”; try to state the rule in a positive way. After listing the rules help them to consolidate it in a more simple way. Ensure that students understand the rules. Making the children participate in the process binds them in a positive way to the rules.
Possibly, schools in elementary classroom are mostly orderly, student-student and student-teacher relationships are positive. In most cases, teaching progresses without major disturbance. Teachers in elementary classrooms recognize the benefits of preventing misbehaving by using fundamental tools of prevention (Charles, M. (2010). For example, they use engaging instructions, positive relationship and well-managed classrooms. In managing behavior problems, the teachers need to identify the problem and its causes. Then this should be followed by modification of learning environment aimed at decreasing the behavior problem. At elementary level children who behave well can be given gifts, this will help others to behave well.
Teachers are mostly recommended to reinforce and teach new skills and talents so as to increase good behaviors and preserve positive climate in the classroom. Children always belong to the society; therefore it is important for teachers to draw close relationship with professionals, society and families of the students. All these parties will help in providing the new insights, support, and strategies. In case the children in the classroom have school-wide behavior issues, it is important to adopt school-wide programs.
In order to monitor the behaviors of students, behavior management cycle should be followed. The management cycle on behavior include effective communication of bad direction, using behavioral narrations, taking efficient corrective action. The management cycles on behaviors helps in building good and trustworthy relationship between teachers, students and parents. The children in elementary students will be ready to change their behaviors when they see the cooperation of the all parties.
Other strategy used in classroom management is known as the life road map. This strategy allows students and teachers to build a map of their entire life in class. They do so by creating series of events to be carried out, inspirations and important decisions. In a class where children come from diverse cultures, the strategy helps them to appreciate own culture and the culture of fellow students. Probably, the strategy provides the students and teachers a forum for discussing their problems especially those that arise due to diversity in race and culture (James, 2007).
Actually, it is important to manage instructional activities in order to promote academic performance and success. Instructions to be put in place include are meant to guide whole-class discussion, teacher-directed instructions, independent work, teacher work and working in groups. It is important to ensure that students in the elementary level follow instructions so that order prevails (Lee, 2005). The managerial strategy to success include introduction of procedures and politics this include, out-of-seat transition, lining in leaving and entering the classroom, attending assembly, collecting and distributing papers and materials and finally the daily routine.
Violence among the elementary level students is very unhealthy for both academic and social growth. Teachers should promote social skills programs among the students. The programs provide training in problem solving technique ad skills. The curriculum should include special activities such as competence test, positive peer relations and interpersonal skills in solving programs.
Success to every student, parent and teacher is the highest achievement. Therefore all the parties should work together towards achieving this goal. Teachers as well as students should determine the inappropriate and appropriate behaviors. Students should need to understand that teachers are putting all efforts in developing a perfect environment in classroom. Above all students and teachers should manage their time and adhere to the rules and regulations. The administration should motivate teachers so as they can create a classroom of positive discipline and success.
