Competency
I have gathered a lot of information and skills to improve my competencies as a nurse since my admission and initial stages of practice. I have come a long way from basic knowledge of nursing practices to gather a considerable amount of knowledge and skills in nursing patient care. There are several skills and knowledge I am willing to collect since nursing is a continuous process. I am ready to explore and apply practical skills through the use of different resources and guidance so as to improve my competencies (Schoreter, 2009).
The use of the evidence-based resources is one of the effective ways to enhance clinical nursing skills. The resources will provide me with the myriad of nursing skills including patient care, nursing communication skills, technical skills, cultural competency, decision-making skills and critical thinking skills. While I have gathered some of these skills, I am willing to explore more to improve my competencies given that nursing is a continuous and practical career. I will explore practice resources such as research instrument information, practice guidelines and legal cases to increase my nursing skills.
There are several lessons from this course work, however; I have gathered one important fact and aspect of nursing; teams and teamwork. I have learnt that nursing thrives and revolves around teams and teamwork. There are several skills that are imperative in attaining teamwork and implementing patient safety and quality improvement: collaboration, communication, conflict management skills and coordination. It is imperative to apply all these skills since they play active roles in attaining teamwork among nurses (Finkelman, 2012).
For an effective teamwork and nursing practices, it is significant that nurses collaborate. I have learnt a few collaboration skills that are imperative for patient safety and quality improvement; effective communication, problem solving, negotiation, assessment of the requirements of the patients or team and awareness of personal feelings on an issue. I will use and apply these skills to improve myself as a nurse.
