Coaching and counseling are the positive procedures which are to bring the remedies for the complicated situations and grant people a hope. The difference between these definitions lies in their issues vision. Counseling turns to the past events and experiences and helps people to stabilize their life. Coaching looks toward the future and shows people the way to maximize their targets.
A coaching session is an example how to act perfectly in every situation. Being perfect is difficult. In the critical situation, when negotiating with an odious customer in the frames of the coaching session, it was hard to stay polite, radiate a calm confidence, appeal to a cloudless future without touching and showing to the incorrect customer’s behavior and mistakes.
The hardest part in coaching session was to work with a disappointed person who had lost a faith and belief in his own forces. In such case the coach is not only to demonstrate the skills or show the professionalism, but is to find a unique approach to the personality and to awaken his consciousness and his desire to live and move forward.
I advise to devote the whole day for the coaching session. From the very beginning of the coaching day discuss with the charge the targets and plans for the session. The atmosphere should be formal and friendly at the same time. Show to your student that you are not the person to judge, but you are the person to help and support. Work on your own during the first part of the day, letting the student observe your actions. Make a coffee break in the middle of the day. During this break transfer the atmosphere into more relaxed and confident, and together with the charge, analyze the results of the session’s first part. Based on this analyses give the task to the student for the second part of the day. He can try to do the same you’ve done, or you can do it together. The main thing about this stage is to allow your colleague to try his forces. Finish the coaching session in the informal atmosphere, for example, enjoying a dinner together with your student. Discuss the results of the day.
Reviewing my previous coaching experiences, I would like to add the post coaching support service. The coach should spend one more day (after the coaching session) with the charge, standing aside, just observing. The observations should be put on paper and referred to the student. It will be good to provide the student with the recommended citations. The responsible coach should not lose communication with the student afterwards, and may repeat the coaching experience later to consolidate the achievements.
