Introduction
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is an excellent example of physiotherapy. Even though it has been applied in various contexts including family issues, the model was specifically designed to cure depression and other related illnesses (Spiegler, Guevremont & Spiegler, 2013). It has not been clear as to who came up with the model, however, the idea was conceived by stoic philosophers, as for that reason, the model is significantly attributed to stoicism. Notably, Epictetus and Aaron T. Becks are thought to be the original developers of the model. Currently, family therapy is the most popular and relevant form of cognitive behavior therapy. It is worth noting that family therapy needs psychological assistance; it involves working with family members experiencing gaps in communication, education of children and building of proper interpersonal skills and sexual relations, just to mention but a few (Pavlov, & Skinner, 2016).
Specific Techniques
An efficient model for conditioning human behavior can only be based on the theory of cognitive processes. The trend was also evident in the reinterpretation of systematic desensitization. As an appropriate way of determining the cognitive processes such as expectations, the coping strategy, and imagination, it gave rise to specific areas of therapy like hidden simulation and training skills. Currently, there are at least ten areas of psychotherapy which relates to cognitive learning. Moreover, they stress the importance of cognitive component. These situations can be of different nature and origin, as well as stages. Some of these situations are natural and significantly uncontrollable, they include the natural life cycle of family life such as marriage, birth, growth and final death. All these cases require resources and proper decision-making (Pavlov, & Skinner, 2016).
Nonetheless, the realization of a new family order should be reconstructed in a timely and more flexible manner, to further development of the Union. However, in such moments, families may experience some difficulties thus necessitating the need of expert help. Other challenges may be generated by events like divorce, infidelity, premature death, loss of a job or even economic crises. The impact of these situations depends on individual’s perception of the events and means of conflict resolution (Behavioral Family Therapy, 2016). Affected families develop a range of feelings, most of whom are not able to cope with the situation and, therefore, lose the ability keep a holistic view of oneself. Family therapy is based on the practice of various trends and schools of thought. The major directive of conducting family therapy may be isolated even though an eclectic approach is always preferred.
Relevance
Cognitive behavior theory is especially relevant to the professional family therapist as they can use its methods and techniques to diagnose a variety maladaptive conditions. For couples and family members, a seed therapy can be utilized, at the session, the pair can either be a spouse, parent, children or immediate family members. The therapist helps the family unearth the etiology of the conflict, how to cope with difficulties, furthermore, he can assist in determining stable roles and behavior patterns, revise stable communication stereotypes and reactions (Pavlov, & Skinner, 2016).
Discussion
The third stage is the reconstruction stage. Phase reconstruction involves an active construction of the family as it was before the event through an active discussion of emerging topical issues. During the discussion, new rules of behavior, communication, attitudes are generated for a conducive and harmonious relationship. The following step is fixing or merely binding the results. An important step is to support and adjust the couples back to their normal life. Still, it should be understood that the steps are rather temporary because attitudes and life are quite flexible, they depend on the prevailing circumstances, acquired skills and personality structures (Wellington, 2011).
Conclusion
This paper entirely dealt with the role played by cognitive behavior theory in relations to family life. The theory proved to be of much benefit in providing guidelines to social workers in their daily ordeal of finding solutions to family problems. Moreover, the conceptual framework and techniques enshrined by the theory are much crucial to family therapists. However, a modern cognitive-behavioral therapy should emphasize the importance of the principles of the theory. Over the recent years, it has been encompassing the provisions of the theory up to and including information processing and communications (Behavioral Family Therapy, 2016).
Recommendations
Even though the theory of cognitive behavior theory has been found to be applicable in family affairs, the researcher should know whether the theory was specifically designed to handle family problems. Over the years, the theory has been viewed in a simplistic and for that reason, literary narrowed down on family affairs. This is an aspect that should be researched on keenly to unearth if indeed stockists had family issues in mind (Cautela & Ishaq, 2011).
