- Communication between school, home, and family helps increase student success and helps the family be supportive of the learner in the home environment and the community feels as though there is a connection to the school community. If a student is struggling in school, a supportive home environment can help the student work on skills that are learned daily in class and reinforce them each night at home. There might also be community programs which are tied to what concepts and lessons are being taught in school to help the student be able to better grasp the instructional material. If a student is having difficulties in the home environment, the school may be able to help by offering a supportive, structured, and nurturing atmosphere that may not exist outside of the school day. Again, there may be community programs that can help the student cope with the stressors in the home environment.
- There are several ways in which the home, school, and community can connect with each other. For younger students, having a weekly newsletter on an assigned day of the week, that reinforces the previous weeks work and explains what the upcoming week and units will be teaching will help parents know what to expect from their child and encourage dialogue. Parents and teachers can communicate in a journal that is kept in the students’ book bag. Classrooms and schools can also have their own websites or utilize social media sites such as Facebook, which are also beneficial to engage secondary students into class and school activities.
